1996 Johnson 175 Fast Strike-Excessive Smoking and Break In Period??

I just bought a boat that has a Johnson 175 Fast Strike on it. It runs like a champ, but does seem to smoke quite a bit when starting and running. Is this usual??

It just had the entire lower unit replaced as well? Is there a break in period for that?

It should smoke a good bit when you fire it up, but once it warms up, it should decrease a good bit.

Just take it easy on the lower for a few hours. Check the fluid and make sure you have no shavings, then run a good gear oild. Merc premium plus is what I use in my OMC.

    Nice setup!

If you want it to smoke even less, try Evinrudes XD100 2-stroke oil. It's yummy!

Please read the bottom of this page re Gear Case Oil. Surely this is the best you can get for your OMC/BRP.

    Nice its a Javelin right?

Here's my think about gear oil LN. I can get the Merc at academy all day long, can't get the other stuff. The guys on Fastbass overwhelmingly recommend it, including some of the builders. Its all about personal preference I guess. One of the best Merc engine builders also recommends it so its pretty hard to ignore that.

I do know one thing, the stuff is pretty slick. I got some alisyn I can put in there if I need to. Its zero weight though.

    You talk about smooth shifting.

I know this is an old thread, but my 97 Fast Strike had the same problem with smoking, and it ended up having a tear in the diaphragm so it was getting too much oil.

just food for thought for the future

    Re: (Cody87)

Looks just like my 93' Fastrike.
Good strong motor for the size.
Have any history on motor from
    previous owner? Maintenance, etc.
Might could use a good decarb enema.
Was using XD-25 because it was easy to
get ( Academy). Been using XD-50 for several
months now. Found it bulk for 18.00$ a gal.

Hey Pat...good luck with that new (to you) rig...she looks like a beauty!!! I also have a Faststrike...if you give her a little too much gas on a cold start she'll smoke quite a bit, but eventually the smoking will stop. Was told that if it does'nt smoke that's when you do have a problem...take that for what it's worth!!!
Just can't leave well enough alone!!
