Who knocked the bottom out of their Champ at the Elite Sat?

Mike McClelland's parent was telling my oldest son about it today.

Like I said that ain't real hard to do on either of the lakes! Only lake I've ever been on where you have to drive 20 miles side to side to go forward 5 .

Once you get out side of the channels now telling what you can hit. If Roddy remembers correctly 2 years ago two guys were coming out of a creek on KY lake and their motor hit a stump as big as a VW, Kicked the motor off the boat and killed either the driver or his partner. I was up there for the BAIT nationals and there is all kind of stuff under the surface concrete pilings, foundations, etc.

i cant beleive they would hold a tourney on such an unsafe navigable lake as to cause harm to the boats and drivers/riders...Your suppose to be finding the fish not avoiding concrete pilings..

It's not the lake that's unsafe, it's the drivers. The channels are marked and shallow areas are marked on the map. It's much easier to run than lots of the lakes in country with standing timber rotted off right at the surface of the water. These guys were just running in really shallow water to save time. I saw more than one of the Elite series boats running wot in less than 4' of water full of stumps. I saw one of them cut threw/ over the islands on south KY lake in about 2' of water with a spectator boat following him. The guy in the spectator boat must looked at his depth finder because he suddenly shutdown and trimmed up his motor to idle out while the Elite series guy just kept on running.

FYI, Fred, Luckily it didn't kill Scotty even though it did break his neck and several ribs. He's doing well now and has already won a couple big tourneys here this year.

if that was the case half of the lakes they go to would be "unsafe" as you say....have you ever seen Champlain...Guntersville....the LA Delta where you can run through the Gulf....thats what these guys do is fish....they prob spend more time in a boat in a year than some of us do in 10 years they know what they are doing.....the lakes aint got nothin to do with it

just asking, if someone is taking chances and running in risky area then i agree with you. The post didnt clearly identify his boat cracked up cause of running out of boundary areas, i constantly fish in tidal waters loading with submerged wrecks, pilings, stumps, trees just below surface, and what ever else is floating, just sad to hear that someone would end up this hurt over a fishing tourney....

What you say is very true.........And if anyone is afraid of un-marked under water obstacles that can destroy your boat, don't come to Texas to go fishing.

In Kentucky Lake you learn how to read your marker buoys real quick. I did back in the 80s. It was quit the learning experience. Sometimes you get overconfident with you ability and take to many chances.

I read on a website report that Skeet Reese's Champ started filling with water and he came back in got his on a trailer and got Mike McClellands back up boat to use the rest of the day on Saturday. I'll try to find the report again. Seems like it was ESPN's Bassmaster site.

Re: Who knocked the bottom out of their Champ at the Elite Sat? (dstacey)

Well I can't find the story now but I know I read somewhere on the internet that Skeet came in early the day it was raining so hard at weigh in because he caught a fish and went back to put the fish in the livewell and stepped in water in the console area because it was filling up with water. He quickly got back to the ramp and got his boat on a trailer before borrowing the backup Champion that Mike Mclellands parents haul to each of the events as a backup boat.

The report didn't go into details as to what happened to his boat but did quote Skeet as saying he wasn't sure what had happened. He did say he was ready to get to the motel becuase he had left his rain gear in his boat and was left in the rain without any rain gear or his face mask to protect him on the drive back to final wiegh in.

Glad he made it back safely.

    OK found it
