    1984 Evinrude

    I recently purchased a 1984 Evinrude 150 Limited Edition outboard mounted to a 1984 Ranger 350V

    Model number E150ANCRS

This will be the first time the motor has been started in a year. There is no gas in the tanks and I am concerned of the deposits, gunk, etc. that may have built up in the tank and am looking for suggestions for the first time I put gas/oil in the tanks. I am afraid that there will be deposits that will be loosened and eventually making thier way to the carbs on the engine which will lead to further problems.

Any tips on what I can do to minimize this risk? One person I have talked to suggested getting in line fuel filters for the gas lines but not sure if that is the way to go. Should I even be worried at this point because the there was no gas in the tanks to begin with?

    Confused ,

You have an inline filter under the motor cover on the port side. You can also install a H20 seperator between the tank and the motor mounts inside you hull.

If it's been sitting for a year and had no fuel stabilizer in the fuel, you will probably have to have a technician remove and thoroughly clean the carbs, drain the fuel tank and start with fresh fuel. Have him inspect all the fuel lines for deterioration and replace the anti-siphon valve in the tank pickup. I would also reccomend a fuel filter/water separator to catch anything that is missed.

You could use a separate six gallon tank mixed with oil 50:1 for test purposes. Hook the fresh fuel tank directly to the engine (bypass the tank in boat) and see if it runs ok. Be advised that most portable tanks fuel pickup and fuel line I.D. are not big enough to supply adequate fuel to a V-6 engine. So just use this method for a brief test in the water.
