    My 115 etec

I bought a 2007 etec 115hp saltwater edition last year. I was replacing a Yamaha 130hp. During the breakin period it started fine. After the 5 hours or so it became VERY hard to start the first time. It would start fine on the water hose but if I launch it and try to start it it took 10-15 trys to start, Once it started and ran abit it would be fine for the trip.
The folks I bought it from tried reloading a map update but it did not help. Also the motor would only turn a 13.25X17P powertech 5350 rpms. I became discussted and parked it in the garage for the winter.
Found a new dealer who came highly recommended but they 3 hours away. No problem. Towed my boat down there left it for 3 weeks and was told all is well.
Drove down, we tested the boat and the same thing. I drove home w/o my boat. Another week later the dealer says he can't fix the cold start problem but has fixed several other problems. I drove 6 hours round trip again to p/u my boat. Ran it today, still was hard to start the first time, after that it was fine. It still only ran 5400 rpms@37.3 knots, same as before. Now the midsection clam is cracked at each bolt due to some heavyhanded tightening. The dealer did reset the computer for XD100 and refill the tank w/XD100 @ no charge. They did however leave the XD50 tag on the motor.
I called him today and he said there was a redesign on the midsection clams and I would be receiving new ones. Also said BRP would be sending a factory rep to meet me and look at my motor.
So far I'm way in the hole and still have a $10,000 motor that is nothing like the hours of infomercials I see all the time. I'm not starting lemon campain yet, just looking for some advice.

black sometimes things like this happens. We just a repower with twin 200's on a 25' Grady White. The boat came from almost 3 hours away. Due to the distance this boat is from us, I spent 45 mins of on water running to make sure everything was right. The first day the customer had the boat he has a midrange problem with the port engine. I can tell you he is not happy but understands that things happen. Next Monday we will be making the ride up to the customer's dock to see first hand what is going on. We will also bring our trailer incase its not a easy fix. Im sure the service rep will be ontop of what is going wrong and set you right up. I know it does you no good but we have about a dozen 115 ETEC's out there and they have been perfect. Setup has alot to do with what a prop will do. There is a good chance the rep may find a setup problem to correct your propping issue. Is this a 20 or 25" engine. Rember if its a 25" model it has the monster gearcase under it, and you may need a high engine mounting height if you can for best performance.

Can you describe your starting symptoms please, does it seem like the starter motor pinion drops out of the flywheel to soon or as the motor starts to fire and does not allow the engine to do a complete revolution.

Check this thread out. My 115 has been super since the fix.

My boat is a Seaswirl 1850, relatively heavy - I could turn 5,650 spinning the 15 X 17 3 blade aluminum prop. Mine is the white 25" w/ large gearcase.

The starter seems to drop out too soon before the motor really starts. Funny thing is it starts fine out of the water and starts fine once it's run for the first time?
Also it is the 20" shaft but will only turn a 13.25X17 3 blade prop 5400 rpm trimmed up. This is on a 17' Maverick flats boat. I'm pretty disappointed to say the least.

Sounds like a bendix problem on the starter. Sounds like mabye prop too big or engine too low. JMHO

Well that's interesting, my E115 DPXSU s/n 05174635 did the same BUT only once, sitting on the trailer backed into the water, it took about 10 tries before it started, very embarrassing BRP! a lot of s******s from people with black anchors on their boats, I look forward to some sort of alert from BRP warning of this issue and fix.

What software revision is listed on the computer printout? Did your dealer give you one, if not you have to find out if it's the proper upgrade.

Next time you use the boat and it tries to start, tilt the prop just out of the water, wait a moment then try to start it. If if fires right up, tilt the motor down right away and enjoy your day on the water. Then find out what software the motor has.

That is the same thing mine did. I was getting very frustrated too. After switching to XD100 and a new map upgrade it worked great the rest of the year. I had the latest map installed a few weeks ago, but have yet to water test it. Maybe sometime this week if the ice goes away.
