MY 94 javelin 389te with a 175 tops out at 58 mph has a great hole shot but has no rooster tail, why?

    Re: rooster tail (dshirley)

It's hard to say. My Cat doesn't throw much of a rooster tail at all when running wide open. Sherm drove it last fall. I was watching on the dock, waiting for him to pick me up. He had it at 79.9mph and the tail was maybe 1-2' tall. So some boats don't run the best trimmed high enough to throw a big rooster tail. I've heard many say the rule of thumb is not higher than the engine. I have no idea if that applies to all boats or not.

I've heard the same thing.. Something along the lines of: If it's higher than the cowl your waisting forward thrust? And that seems to be the case on mine as well..
Might be a different story on the lighter/performance hulls (Allison, Stroker, Bullet, etc.) though?

edit: after watchin that Tennessee river run vid, it definitely looks like a Bullet runs best with a big tail!

You should be breaking 70mph with that 389 and 175hp. Anyway, like other said some boats just don't let the motor throw one. Some boats won't run right unless it's high and soaking people around you...my Charger 195vf is one of those boats.

If a boat is setup perfect, weight, prop, prop height it will have very little tail.

    Re: rooster tail (dshirley)

high rooster tail to some may "look cool" but it is happening due to improper setup. the prop is blowing water in the air and not thrusting the boat forward. you don't want a high rooster tail. tail should only be about as high as the cowl.

Yamaha Pro V 200, Solas HR Titan 4 (Yamaha m25 before a rock ledge took it out), and yes it has a plate. The Titan started throwing a big rooster tail after I vented it to make it come out of the hole quicker. It's about level with the motor but ventless it was only a few inches tall. with the m25 it was tall and wide. Any lower on the jack plate and it wouldn't lift right. It was also WAY overpropped and still overpropped with the 23p Titan. That's one reason I joined this forum so I could get the most out of my boat. Whatever I end up with for the new boat I hope that with the help of this forum to turn it into a screamer.

My question is, who can turn around to see the rooster tail while driving at WOT?

    Re: rooster tail (dshirley)

I have that boat and even with the hydrolic j/p
I had no rooster tail. So maybe the hull design.

    Re: rooster tail (dshirley)

My last boat, a 97 skeeter with a 150 duo prop would throw a tail when it was topped out.
Now i have my javelin 400 with a 200 on it, has a little tail when accelerating but once i have trimmed up and raised the plate to run WOT it has very little tail behind it.

If you look closely, what looks like a big rooster tail is surfacing prop spray. The tail is usually not very high.

3 1/2" off the pad with a 13 1/2 X 23 renegade prop, 6 inch High Jacker manual jack plate, Plate is set in the front hole. Some are saying to raise the motor half inch, some are saying to move the jack plate to the back hole, how many rpm's should this 94 175 evinrude be turning.

    Re: (dshirley)

My 93' 389dc with a 175 Intruder ran 67 radar after Lee Sanderson did the setup. I had a 10" jackplate with the Renegade. Your motor is in the right area at 3.5". The motor would turn around 5,600 in cold weather and at 5,400 in the summer. You have a lot of slip. How are you loading the boat? What condition is your prop in? A improper rebuild could be a problem if you don't know its history. Try either a known stock Renegade or try a 24p Raker. A Raker will give you better bow lift and maybe another mph but the Renegade handles better.
