Angry "Windows Technical Support" - Be Aware of this Scam

Tonight, I got a call from "Charles" who spoke in a very bad foreign accent. He didn't ask for any specific person. He went to on to say that he was with "Windows Technical Support" and that my computer had been sending error messages from viruses.

I had heard of this scam before. They want you to go to a website that does a remote connection over the internet back to your computer for nefarious purposes.

I asked him which computer it was that was sending messages? Silence. He said it was the one I was using. I replied, my computers are all UNIX systems, how could you be getting Windows messages from my computer. "click".

Anyway, here is more info: “I am calling you from Windows”: A tech support scammer dials Ars Technica | Ars Technica I also logged a complaint with the FTC for the Do Not Call registry.

I've had a couple of calls in the past, they claimed to be from the Windows Corporation.

They get really mad, and insult your mom, cuss at you if you keep them on the line for awhile and then tell them you have no internet.

No, but I'm betting they didn't like what I did tell them.

I've had them call me also. I told them I don't have any Windows because I live in a root cellar and don't even own a phone. Then I hang up.

The world is full of scammers because it's also full of people who fall for them.

If you think that is bad Check out what the crypto locker does. CryptoLocker Ransomware Infections | US-CERT I had a client get hit. Fortunately their firewall, which we maintain, caught it trying to get out and encrypting their files. The firewall alerted us, via email, that something on the inside was trying to get out.
