Spark Plug Question Ref: Dielectric Grease

Rusty. seahorse, ruditech, Fred, any of you knowledgeable folks, need a ? answered.

Just changed my plugs in an 03' Rude 200 DFI. Noticed one plug was corroded with rust on the end. Can I use dielectric grease for plugs. I thought I read somewhere that it's not recommended on the DFI's. Is it ok to do this? What would cause this problem? Many Thanks

    Sandy

Re: Spark Plug Question Ref: Dielectric Grease (ogcj)

First use a brush to clean out any rust and corrosion from inside the cap. There are "distributor cap brushes" available to reach up inside the spark plug cap.

You should use dialectric grease on every sparkplug, I think that is printed in the manuals.

If it was #5 or #6 plug that was rusted, you might check why water is being ingested into the air intake of the motor cover, or find the leakage where the motor pans come together in the rear.

Re: Spark Plug Question Ref: Dielectric Grease (SEAHORSE)

Seahorse, thanks for replying quickly. I bought some grease just for this if needed, it will be used. The plug with the rust was top starboard, don't know the cylinder #'s. (I guess I need to know that for future ?'s). I don't have the brush you mentioned, but I do have something that will work good.

I looked for any leaks and found none. The motor still looks brand-new (and runs great). Is it possible that the plug itself was defective on the cap? All the other plugs look the same with average wear with about 60 hours on them.

PS, Tell me those cylinder #'s reference port/starboard for us lay people.

    Many Thanks

Just remember more is not better.
Use it sparingly, don't be sloppy or have it oozing out and have traces of it smeared on the spark plugs.

Yes sir, I use it on all of my engines. Once in my younger days many moons ago.
While tunning my 350 ci 375 hp small block Chevy. I accidentally had it smeared on the spark plugs and wires.
Man I had sparks arcing from the spark plugs to anything close by, headers and spark plug shields.
Now, I apply it with a Q-tip, only inside the wire cap where it contact the plug terminal.
