I want to check the WOT timing on my 89 200 rude. I have already got my pointer correctly dialed. My book says to put a test prop on, get it up to normal temp, and run it 5000-5500 RPM in test tank- then check timing . I don't have a test prop or tank. Is there another way to do this? Can I get it up to normal temp or either trick my temp sender in the port head, then pull all plugs accept #1 and have some one crank it while holding the throttle wide open and check my timing.
No!!! The timing on your motor can only be set while running, in gear at at least 4500
RPM's and 5000 would be better. If you don't have a test wheel, you'll have to take it
to a shop that has a test tank.
Chances are pretty good that your WOT timing is on the money anyway. Unless you messed with the stop you should be good.
I was able to check the timing on my motor by using a test propeller. Be forewarned that running the motor at 4,000-RPM with the cowling off at a dock with the test propeller will generate a very loud engine noise. Be prepared for this--the engine will really be roaring and it will attract a lot of attention from people nearby.
Well, the guy that owned the boat & motor before me had a local dealership to change out the timer base. I know for sure this dealership does't have a test tank and I really don't beleive they took it to the water. Anyway I decided to check out the timing pointer and it was way off. So even If they did set the timing according to the pointer, I know it is off. I wonder If I could take a really low pitch(junk) aluminum prop and check timing at the ramp on the trailer.

That's something I've wondered too!!!! Would like to hear something on this.
I persoanlly haven't did this, BUT I have seen a few guys that have took them, cut the blades about half off, and did it.... It ain't pretty, and man you have to be careful, as anyone that has did it with a test wheel will tell you, the motor really jumps around some, it is LOUD, and that flywheel will NOT BE FORGIVING ON THE FLESH!
Most good prop shops know how to turn an old junk prop into a test wheel. I think if you
give them the make and model of your motor and the WOT range you're wanting to run
at, they can make it.

Yeah do it on a Sunday AM about 9 AM and see what kind of looks you get.You've spent all day Saturday finishing up a re-build and you are dying to fire it up,,,after you bolt it to the mid-section and ready you flip a coin, pop a top on a frosty or wait untill the next day. Frosty wins, but the motor still gets popped off and a 1 hour run. Don't matter. You still enjoy the frostys when she cranks over.
