start up procedure evinrude 225 ficht ram injection

I have just bought a 1987 stratos 20 ft bass boat with 225 hp evinrude motor, year 2000,model # E225FPLSSC,(first boat) Im stunned with all the buttons and stuff on this boat. also has hot foot gas pedal , yesterday,Friday, I tried all day to start it,Would not start, let it alone for a couple of hours then tried again ,after it coughing like it was going to start and trying that about ten times it started,I have new 91 octane gas in it with fuel stabilzer added ten ounces to 24 gallons of gas,There is a lever in back of boat, where gas tanks are ,Looks like four positions looking towards the back of the boat turning lever left will turn on left tank turn right for right tank down for both tanks up to shut off both tanks, I guess, when you turn the key on it sends a buzzing noise to the motor, it looks like if you depress the key it primes motor, I guess , I would like to know the normal starting procedure to start this motor, last night when I got it running I let the motor run until it ran out of gas then today I came out and have tried to start it all day with no success, I would appreciate any and all help and as this is all new to me, and seems very technical, which is really getting me frustrated and pissed off if I'm allowed to say that, thank you, Cephas

Lets start with regapping the spark plugs & seeing how it starts. If it starts better, decarb the engine and install/index a new set of spark plugs. If you do not know what indexing is then ask your local dealer when you get the plugs.

Re: start up procedure evinrude 225 ficht ram injection (AquaMarineNJ)

Hello, I appreciate you getting back to me so fast to give me some help, but I need to start from scratch ,on my boat is a fuel port switch up says port fuel switch down is STBD does that have anything to do with starting the motor, when I turn my key do I leave it on I hear a buzzing what I do about that, do I depress the key to prime it, I really need to know each and every step the correct procedure to get the boat ready or motor before I even turned the key to start it I will recap the spark plugs, what setting do I regap them at, what does Decarb mean, the handle for the gas tanks should it be on the left or on right or on a top or pointed down, sorry about being so illiterate on the subject, but I need to know each and every move to make before I even turned the key to start the motor thank, where you shift forward and reverse, there is a lever with a picture of a manual on it is that just for keeping the gears locked in place or does that have anything to do with starting the motor, also the power switch that turns the dash instruments on, does that need to be on first I guess you can see by now I really need to know each and every move to make to properly start that Evinrude motor, one other thing is two nights ago the last time I ran the motor I turned the gas tank off and let the motor run out of gasI dont know is that has anything to do with it or not starting back up thank you Cephas

NO, I am assuming this is for the gas gauge sender wire. For reading the fuel tank level.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cephas &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> I turn my key do I leave it on I hear a buzzing what I do about that, do I depress the key to prime it, </TD></TR></TABLE>
The buzzing in the motor is the electric fuel pump. Depressing the key does nothing for that engine. To start leave the shift handle in neutral & just turn the key to start. (Before tring to start make sure the "Manual fuel valve" not the switch is on one tank or the other and the primer bulb was primed.)

Regap at 30 thousands but if you ran it out of gas that could be your problem. (the gap is also on the EPA sticker on the motor bracket) Decarbonize. It's Spray stuff in a can. Known as Engine Tuner, Read the can.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cephas &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> the handle for the gas tanks should it be on the left or on right or on a top or pointed down, </TD></TR></TABLE>
It should possibly be pointing at the hose that goes to the fuel tank but I can not let you know which way is what without looking at it.

I'm assuming you are talking about a side mount box. It would be for throttle warm up but you would leave it down for this model engine. It should be down before you turn on the key. If it is up when you turn on the key it will mess up the TPS calibration. If you had it up during startup just push it down, shut off & restart the engine. This will reset the TPS calibration. This lever on the control would do nothing if your throttle cable was connected to a hot foot. I think you may have said hot foot above so do not press it when starting or while turning on the key.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cephas &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> also the power switch that turns the dash instruments on, does that need to be on first </TD></TR></TABLE>
NO, not really. If the gauges do work without it on then it was rewired during the repower. (engine replacement) The gauges on most boats are turned on with the key. Some, but very few boats have gauge ON/OFF switches.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cephas &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">one other thing is two nights ago the last time I ran the motor I turned the gas tank off and let the motor run out of gasI dont know is that has anything to do with it or not starting back up thank you Cephas
    </TD></TR></TABLE>
Do not run it out of gas because it will become hard to get it running again. Prime the primer bulb & turn on the key. Let the electric fuel pump run until it turns off. Turn off the key & prime the primer bulb again. Turn on the key again & see if you can get it to start up. You have to get the air out of the engine side of the fuel system because you ran it out of gas.

    For Normal Startup
    (1) Turn on the fuel valve. (Not the Switch) Pick a tank
    (2) Prime the primer bulb. (It's on the fuel hose in the rear)
    (3) Turn on the gauges if you want.
    (4) Turn on the key. (no throttle)
    (5) Turn the key to start. (vroom) (hopefully)

I'm not sure if I skipped anything but this should help.

    Re: (cephas)

Perplexed,Yesterday it started 20 times,Today wont start, just turns over and over gapped plugs to 30 were at 45,still wont start, called several marine mech in fresno nobody works on evinrude and none of them have any idea what indexing plugs mean, all I know is I can try all day to start it ,then wait a few hours then it starts up and will start eveytime time after it has started the first time , then the next day its the same thing it wont start?I forgot to mention this it happed the first time I brought this boat home a week ago,I took the cover off the motor to look at it then later I went to trim the motor up , it was dead,I took the cover back off and jiggled a cluster of wires and it started working again,Put cover back on went dead again, jiggled wire cluster started working ,had to put cover on three times until it was set just right so the trim would work Cephas

    Re: (AquaMarineNJ)

I had a loose connection on the trim wires where they plug in at the PDP. Tried rerouting the wires under the PDP and around the PDP and plugged in. Voila!! No more issues. I might note my cover is tight and was pulling on the wires. The PDP is on the starboard side of the motor with a black cover with 2 slotted screws. Hope this helps the trim issues.

Heres one thought, are you priming the primer bulb until it is solid. I have had a couple boats where you thought they were solid but wouldnt start. Make sure when you are priming that the bulb is as hard.

    Re: (cephas)

cephas, one thing that has not been mentioned is the fact that you have to really spin that motor to git it to start, I believe it has to turn at 200 RPM's. The recommended battery is a 1000 MCA. The starter is another possible problem when the motor is cold they may not turn fast enough to start the motor, a good auto-electric shop can test it and repair if needed. all grounds need to be clean and tight. No wing nuts on the battery.

Safety lanyard hooked up? Is the shifter in the start position? Full gas line - bulb hard?
    Fuel filter clogged?
