    Johnson 2000 90hp Reverse .. Tech ???

I will do my best to frame my question the best as I possibly can with my limited knowledge of OB mechanics.

The engine has less than 100 hrs. I developed a intermittent nano/second bump/hesitation at speed. The mech indicated I had a worn down dog gear, et al.

I recently had the LU rebuilt. Now works fine. When I had this done, I mentioned that I thought the reverse gear engaged too close to the neutral position on the downstroke of the throttle/shifter lever.

Adjustments were made: Now the reverse engagement is much too far south of the neutral position. It also seems the power in reverse is much less than before the adjustment. Is this adjustment made in the LU or cables.

This engine runs great, strong as a horse. Good hole shot (3 sec.) and top end on my Hewes Redfisher 16. Get 43 mph trimmed at WOT.

I am considering a repower to an ETEC 90hp. What is your opinion regarding this thought process. Pro would be: back under warranty. Con: The J90 is running pretty good. For me, reliability is the most important aspect.

Thanks in advance for listening and hopefully responding.

    DR

You might try to adjust it back just a hair toward the fwd side. The engines typically do not have much reverse depending on the control box used. Or , hang the Etec 90 on it, if you do, go ahead and get the cables changed out incase there is a cable wear issue( this could also be why the shift is off).

Is this done at my CC in the control mechanism?

You can adjust the shift cable at the motor, place the control box in neutral, remove the shift cable at the motor, shift the motor into neutral.

Adjust the cable to fit into the trunnion holder and on the shift linkage and reattach.

This should give you a proper shift adjustment.
