    Long run,engine overheated

Made a long run which I make quite often but this time I got the steady beep alarm about 3/4 of the way to my destination.I had it trimmed up all the way and was hitting 5500 thru most of the ride until I heard the alarm.Water pressure gauge was okay but I was shooting a high rooster tail, about 2 ft over the motor.

Only difference was that I had a good size co-angler (275# + all his gear).Would the extra weight and the warmer water temps cause overheating on a long run?

    Motor is a 1992 Evinrude 200STLENS (3.1)

Was your water pressure guage bouncing around a lot?? Sometimes when a rig is set up real tight aomething off sets that balance it can cause something different to happen. If the wp guage was bouncing then you may have gotten air in the water pickup.

If it was an overtemp motor would have went into SLOW mode, sounds like a Fuel Alarm (starvation) comes from the vacuum switch. Motor will steady alarm and motor will not loose RPM, comes on in the upper RPM range. Check your fuel lines.

C-man,a steady alarm is for fuel problem? That makes some sense because I changed to a different fuel filter recently and have been having some takeoff problems.Sometimes when I hammer it to take off,it just stalls out.......fires right back up but has been sluggish getting up since the fuel filter change.Anything like that ring a bell?

Why would it have not started to alarm until way into the run if it was starving for gas?I'm talking 12-14 minutes at just about WOT.

Both the overheat and fuel restriction alarms are constant beeps. I made that mistake last year. Couldn't figure out why I had a heat alarm after the drive home. Maybe it took a few minutes for the new filter to clog up ?

If you installed a 5/16" filter instead of a 3/8" filter that would do it, also the arrow on the filter should point towards the motor (DIRECTION OF FUEL FLOW).

Was the new filter the same manufacturer?

About the filter......I had a glass filter on there (3/8) but the openings were so small that it seemed like it was starving for gas.I changed it to another 3/8 plastic filter but the openings looked bigger than the glass one of same apparent size. Both took a 3/8 hose but the current plastic filter seems to allow more gas.

I also worked the new fuel line to where it is going straight into the motor hood, then looping around and into the carbs. It had previously been zip-tied in with the other cables and wires and had one heck of a 90 degree bend in it,just before going into the hood.

I have made that run since I changed filters and it hasnt alarmed until this latest trip.

And I do have the filter on correctly,I triple checked that when putting it on.Thanks for all the help, any other ideas?

Since the alarm is before the VRO it is detecting a leak in the line coming in. You can disconnect the Vac switch to test run but be advised it may stumble at WFO. I'd suggest a fuel line test , posted in previous post.

C-man,I dont have a VRO unit,I mix it myself if that matters.

What is WFO? WIDE F****** OPEN?

Thanks for your help,I gotta get this fixed asap.

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY OF PROBLEM: When I bought the boat, there had been an electronic fuel pump installed just outside the gas tank.To start the motor,I have to flip the toggle for the fuel pump, press key in for choke and it fires right up everytime. If I were to remove the fuel pump,is the fuel pulled from the tank by the carbs or is there something in between usually? The fuel pump has been making some funny sounds lately but when I turn it on,it fills up the filter immediately, just like always.

Yep Wide F#$$#^ open= WFO. . I'm guessing that the fuel pump is supplying the fuel flow as on a VRO motor the bellows on the VRO pumps the fuel. There should be a T in the line with a small hose coming off it. That goes to the Vacuum Switch.
