    1987 johnson gt150 strator troubleshooting

First off I am new and found this forum when searching for info about my motor losing power. My motor is a 1987 150 gt (so the cowling says) mod. # j150stlcur ser # r7496877 (this info was from the motor/boat transom mount sticker).

The motor some times will bog down when trying to start up on a plane, other times it will be running alone fine and then power will drop off just like someone pulled the throttle back. I have pulled the plug wires while this was going on and one side of the motor is only firing lightly compaired to the opposite side. In other words one side you can hear over the engine firing over the engine noise, while the other side you need to put your ear close to hear it. I swapped powerpacks from one side to the other but the problem remained on the same side. I have ohmed the stator out one side reads ~930 ohms while the other side reads ~611 ohms. I made a harness to switch stator connections from one pack to the other and the problem moved to the other side.

My question is: 1) is the stator bad?

    2) shouldn't both sides of the stator ohm out the same or close to the same

My service manual says to replace if either reading is 970 +/- 15.

With the cost of outboard motor parts I don't want to be replacing parts just to see if they are the cause.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

I'd replace the timer base. You can very carefully check the output of the stator with the engine running, carefull, close to 300 VAC and it can kill you!!! I would have a trained tech perform this test. Safety first.

I replaced the stator over the weekend and the motor seems to be running like it use to. Time will tell now. Thanks for the help.
