    setting timing.....

alright... i talked with rusty last week and think that the loss of rpms on the top end and low end torque might be an issue with the WOT timing because when i had the motor worked on earlier this year the sync and lync was done but not the top end because it was ball busting cold... now my dilema is no one.. and i mean no dealer around me sets the timing with a test wheel.... this is a problem. everyone tells me it has tobe set with a test wheel in a tank. my father in law is a very good merc mechanic and said what he did years ago was take the link out from the throttle linkage so that when you hit wot it does not engage the carbs but the timing will advance to WO. if anyone has a test wheel that i could borrow or knows where i could pick one up reasonably i could really use a hand here... i dont care if i have to pay shipping both ways and rent for the wheel or what..buti gotta get this taken care of.. or if anyone knows a way to get it real close...

    Thanks once again,

    Jim

I will probably get my hand smacked on this one, but, I have seen before were you strap the boat to the trailer, back it in the water with the prop on, trim it just so you have water pressure, and gun on it, and let another guy shoot the timing.... I personally do not like this, as it jerks and bumps pretty bad as well and you really have to be careful as to not get ya arm in the flywheel, cuz they will tear you up!

    Re: setting timing..... (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

yea.. i dont especially like the idea of doing it that way either.. however.. i dont have too much of a choice here unless i can get my hands on a test wheel. Im even willing to buy one if i can find one.. i believe that the motor is strong, and i take care of it, but it just has this one little issue yet and as id like to take a drive to see rusty, its hard to justify a trip to tennessee to get the timing set :)... its pretty sad that there are shops in my area that wont even look at the motor since it wasnt bought from them.. kinda ridiculous but that just means when i need parts i call rusty.. and get em from them...

MCM, (Music City Marine) has a test wheel we can send.............But........FLYWHEELS EAT FLESH, this is a procedure that SHOULD be performed by a Trained technician.

There are a couple of those around MCM's service department.

    Re: setting timing..... (RUSTY63)

i read on the net (somewhere)about setting timing on trailer, i have a 115 rude 96yr. pull your plugs, hook sparkgap tester,on no. 1 cylinder, send throttle to wo turn engine over and set timing 2 degrees below as it will gain 2 degrees under load, thats what i did on my 115, went to lake hung off back ,(with really good friend driving) checked and it was right on, wish i could remeber whr i saw it

    Re: setting timing..... (hydrasport)

well... as i said.. my father in law is a merc tech.. and a good one at that... matter of fact many people tell the owner that they want no one but himworking ontheir motor and many people bring their boat to this marina because hes the mechanic. so he could do it he said.. just would need the wheel to do it correctly.

    thanks,

    Jim
