    Stator and trigger question

A friend of mine stated that when the stator or trigger went out on the late 80's early 90's Johnnie/Rudes, that both would have to be replaced. (Not sure of the exact year, but it is one of the 150GT's) At least this is what his mechanic told him as he replaced the stator and trigger.

The stator was the oringinal problem, but the mech replaced both stating that the new stator would fry the old trigger which in turn would cause the new stator to go bad again. (Damn if it don't seem like I'm talking in circles) They both had to be replaced at the same time new or else.

So is this legit or did the mech make a few extra bucks on an uneeded repair? If it is legit, would it also be the same way with a 1996 150HP Faststrike?

Re: Stator and trigger question (ernel)

2 different beasts, one is a cross flow one is looper. Some techs will replace the complete ignition system on a 150 crossflow (GT/XP) with out testing and it will cost the owner about $1500 clams for parts, Stator, Timer base, VR and PP plus labor. The FS/truder is a little different in its ignition system as there is an optical pickup that tells the mortor when to fire the PP.
A good tech can/should be able to diagnose any ignition problem on a cross flow 150 or a looper 150, and not shot gun parts.

Re: Stator and trigger question (ChampioNman)

Kudos to ChampioNman on this one. The only reason I change the OIS on the 60 degree is due to the fact that the powerpack feeds the pickup voltage to the unit, SOMETIMES the OIS will go out after a new pack installation. Changing a stator should not affect it. If he has the Ignition analyzer, he should be able to find it good or bad.
