Rusty: Question about battery application.......

I have read your prior answers about batteries and what is recommended by Bomb for starting applications. In your experience, which of these batteries would be better for the starting battery? Keep in mind, my Ranger is running everything off of the crank battery except the trolling motor.......2 sonars, aerators, etc.

(1) "Cranking" style battery / 50 amp hr / 1000 cca.
(2) "Deep Cycle" battery / 75 amp hr / 1125 cca.

I know that the specs on the deep cycle are larger, but how will it do in a cranking situation, being that it is a deep cycle design? I also don't have any onboard charger for the crank battery. Only for the TM batteries. How will my alternator do if it has to re-charge a huge battery?

As always......thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. I DEFINITELY don't understand batteries very well.

Re: Rusty: Question about battery application....... (Hair Jig)

Hey Steve, I ain't Rusty but I spoke with one of the engineers at Everstart. They said if you are going to run livewells and other assc. of cranking battery to run a deep cycle and that would gain you some more. So I now run 3 Everstart MAxx series 29 in my rig. Of course my older rig doesnt have strict voltage/amperage for cranking like alot of the newer engines do but have been pleased with them. I know they are not Optimas or Trojans but have a free 18 month freem replacement. Si I would recomend the deep cycle.

But let's see what the master gearhead's advise.

Thanks for the help Kerry! I was leaning towards the deep cycle, but wanted some more opinions. I already got two 60# Optimas on the trolling mtr. Another 60# battery back there & I'll have to add some flotation.

I agree with the weight thing. Nothing like 200#'s pounds of lead to help your speed out. Wish I could afford the optimas. they are top of the line for sure

The trolling batterys are sure enough heavy! However this will be interesting! I've not ever had a problem using a starting battery, as long as it's a good one and I make sure every thing's off! I use the biggest crancking batt I can get in there usually. JMHO

Hey Mike, I run 6 pumps to livewells and 4 blacklights in the summer so that is why I geared up on my cranking battery. You got to run them areators like the AC in the summer with the Gville sows in there

Kerry......you'd win more tournaments if you'd give those fish a break. They're working so hard to stay upright they gotta be losing some weight!

Steve you are probably right. Good thing none die from ammonia or poor oxygen content. May keel over due to fatigue

Re: Rusty: Question about battery application....... (Kerry201pro)

It wont hurt to run a deep cycle battery but if you are running a direct injection motor they require a higher cranking amp battery. I had a 1000 cranking amp battey that I changed after four years was still cranking good but I replaced anyway because I did not want to chance it going bad on the water. When I went to replace it I was going to buy a everstart but I could not find one that heavy duty so i called my local mechanic and he said to stay with a heavy duty 1000 amp battery because the Fichts require it to fire.

I agree, I would suggest a 1000 Cranking amp battery, Deep cycle or starter, your choice.
