    help with lifting 175hp

Hi - I'd like to know the proper way to lift a 175 hp 1992 evinrude intruder(VE175GLENC) and is there more than one method? I need to lift it to install replacement steering cables. Can you please advise?

Also - I am installing replacement dual rack teleflex cables. What type of lubricant do you use on the shaft at the motor end? I've heard differing opinions. Dealers around here seem to use triple guard grease but I've also heard that lithium is much better. Your opinions would be appreciated.

    Thank you

That motor should have some rings cast in the head. Mine does anyway.

I do have two rings on the engine. I wasn't sure that was what they are for as I believe many engines lift from the top using an eye so wanted to make sure.

Anyone have opinions on the steering cables question????

I use triple guard. Use a chain with hooks for the lifting.

    Ranger365,

Is there a chance you can replace the cables without moving the engine? I know the sticking point can be making the turn from the rear corner into the motor. I was able to take both ends loose and pull from under the dash. Lucky I guess. But mine is '91 walleye hull.

Anyway, the point of my post was to tell you about something I did that made the pulling and replacing go very smoothly. When I got my cables loose, I took a piece of plastic water pipe (the kind that goes from the water meter to the house) and slid it over the old cable before I removed it. I it pushed over the cable (from the motor end) and pushed all the way up and out under the dash. Then removed the old cable. Leaving a "plastic conduit" in the gunwale. The new cable slid easily thru for installation. Then removed the plastic pipe. It worked great. No dragging, catching and hanging on hull wires. Maybe it will work for you too.

Re: help with lifting 175hp (Circle Hook)

Circle Hook - no way of installing w/o lifting as jackplate causes too sharp a turn to get it in. Bent the crap out of existing cables and was barely able to bend enuff to remove them with force.
I then pulled old ones out with a 1/4" rope rope attached to end to use for feeding the replacement cables which worked well. Your idea of the tube is also a good idea that I'm sure someone will try after reading your suggestion.

Be sure that you use 2 chains about 3' long, or a cross-bar with chains and hooks on each end so they will lift straight up instead of pulling inward on the cast-in lift rings. Make sure you do not use large size hooks that would catch the plastic flywheel cover and damage it.

30" chain works fine, at that specific length the triangle it forms will clear all the parts of the motor. To short and it will be rubbing on some important and expensive items that you will be replacing. I just lifted mine 150 intruder and it works fine a S hook works so will 2 3/8" 1.5" bolts/nuts and some thick washers

    Re: rusty/championman/seahorse--lifting 175hp question (StratosDadRI)

A little late with a response as I finished installing the steering in June but just wanted to say thank everyone for all the help. Engine was easy to lift using all the tips I was given by posters and the steering went in easily as well.

    What a great site!!!
