    Diagnose 89 200xp rude

I am the proud new owner of an 89 Stratos 289fs/200 Evinrude. I've fixed the usual wiring problems(caused by previous owners brain malfunctions), De-carbed,synchronized throttle linkage, new plugs, new impeller&gear oil,new fuel filter &oil pickup filter/screen. It runs good to start out with, idle is good, jumps up on plane, runs 62.5 at wot (gps) for the 1st run 10-15 min. After restart when I give it gas it acts like it's getting starved, like my old 79 Johnson did before I rebuilt the fuel pump. Local dealer says to replace the vro unit ($268 just for the part). Where should I start to trouble shoot this? I haven't been able to get the tach to work the wiring seems intact the gauge has power and ground, I did have a burned up yellow wire in the juction block I replaced, and it seems ok now. Any guidance would be appreciated

    Welcome to the BBC.

On the motor not planing the boat I would look at the sync and link first and then look at the fuel system...this is taking for granted the compression and ignition system are good.

On the tach problem...I would go out Right Now and disconnect the cranking battery, you posted you had replaced a burned yellow wire and that leads me to the regulator/rectifier, check it or have it checked, if it is shorted it could cause a big problem.

Thanks for the reply. The wire I referred to was the yellow wire from the stator to the terminal block, it was more corroded looking than burnt, it did look like it had gotten hot at the ring terminal. I cut it, stripped it back 1/4 inch and soldered a new ring terminal on and reconnected it. Before that the battery was not charging, after that it was. It's been ran a couple of hours since then. I will take your advice and check or have it checked out. It had some intermitent electrical glitches turned out to be at connectors and/or cracked wires at the ignition and kill switches, I redid them all and now they are soldered and heat shrunk. The compression was 85-95 on all six, it hadn't been run much and it was pretty cold out. When I got the boat it had a broken throttle cam pickup adjustment knob. I replaced that and sync'd the linkage according to the Clymer shop manual I have. I think my problem is fuel related(unless the rectifier situation doesn't check out) Thanks again

Could you please post the Sync/Link procedure. I think this has been done before here but I cannot find it. Thanks.
