Customline Trailer

The 20' XDC Bullet I bought came with a 2000 dual axle Customline trailer that is rough. The paint is peeling with some surface rust and the carpet is falling apart. I am torn between restoring or replacing. I know the bunks are relatively easy but how about the carpet on the wheel wells? Has anyone replaced that? Is it just glued on? Kits anywhere? Or for a replacement single axle (my preference), what do you guys like? I am thinking aluminum might make sense in the long run.

Take that carpet off and clean up the rust. Then add diamond plate. Use poster board to fit and trace it on the DP. All the pieces will be different. I have heard of some that use Hurculiner for paint as a do it yourself project. Not sure how it holds up.

Like Mike said..Have it repainted and add the diamond plate.I did mines the same way and did all my cross beams with herculiner.I also put Herculiner on the fender boards before i put the carpet.Total cost on blasting and painting with a three coat system,new boards carpet and Herculiner....Less than $500...I've done two trailers for the same amount..

I wish you were closer, I would hand you a check and have you do mine! $500 is a bargain. Is there a kit for the inner wheel well carpet or did you just use marine grade and cut to suit? Is it just glued on? Must have to overlap the top a little to protect the hull, just in case.

I used marine grade carpet and used a staple gun to attach it.You have to overlap it about 2"s.Actually your boat hardly if ever touches the fenders.My last boat i put diamond plate on the fender wells and the boat never came close to touching.Thats what the bunk boards over your back step are for.To guide the boat up right on the trailer..
I wish you were closer also.I'd take your trailer there for you.I had it done with a 3-coat system they use on offshore rigs and cranes..$300.

So you actually stapled it to the backside of the wheel well? It's not metal back there? How about the 2" overlao on top, how did you hold that down? Was it difficult to get that area installed smoothly since it has to overlap and also go around the fender radius? I know, lots of questions. Just trying to figure it out if I should try it or not.

Your talking about the wood backing on the fenders right..I stapled it to that..When you put the carpet on you will have to make small slices in the carpet so it will fit with the radius of the fender.Its very easy..Oh and i don't mind the questions..Thats why this forum is here..To help everyone..

So you probably glued the overlap to the stainless on top? Thanks, I appreciate it.

I didn't glue anything.What stainless are you talking about?..The fender itself?..If so there are bolts that hold that on..

I meant where the carpet overlaps the top of the fender by 2". I thought maybe you glued it to hold it down.

No the carpet doesn't overlap the fender.The board is attached to the fender by bolts which is attached to the carpet by staples

I had to do minds also but on a201 . Itook both tires off and pulled it off and used it to draw the radias of the new one on some old plywood i had and sprayed it with some under coat i had left from during my truck They said you can by it a wal -mart? It's easer to get to the bolts leave in the fram i just took a small hand griner and grind the bolts off the one's that was to rust to turn. I used the same carpetbut minds lap over just lap and glued with some indoor /out door spray glue then stapled it with (ss) and new ss bolts which i got it all at home-depote has last about 2 yrs now the one's that came from the factory was made out obs board and sprayed with some kind of expory the other one is still holding up. IF yours don't lap just glue it then staple it ar if you replace i would lap new carpet looks a little better you can do it

Mike what did you use to hold the plate down? Couldn't tell from the pictures. Maybe a button, socket head thru bolt with a washer and self locking nut on the bottom? Seems like one on each plate should do it.

I used clear RTV silicone with many small beads under the plate. I did start to put in one button cap bolt/nut in the center of each, but wanted to do it when the boat was off the trailer to drill from the top. I only put one nut/bolt on and forgot to do the rest. They are on very tight though. I cleaned both the back of the DP and where it goes with acetone so the RTV would grab real good.
