    opti oil/ recommendation

just got a bulletin today at work and as of now ALL OPTI'S INCLUDING PRO XS ARE TO NOW RUN OPTI/DFI OIL AS THE RECOMMENDED OIL, i have seen a ton of compressor failures and most are on pro xs's??? not sure if the oil was the main contributor but besides that the dfi oil is a cleaner burning, less carbon build up formula, i know premium plus is a great oil but maybe they have put there finger on something??? just wanted to let you guys know of the change!!!!

Will it hurt mixing the oil I have left in the tank with the Dfi/Opti oil cause I just filled it up for the weekend.

Must be something new..I was told the premium plus is the oil to use on the Opti's.
and teh DFI oil was over rated

    Re: opti oil/ recommendation (Bryan)

All the guys that I know who race 2 stroke engines have run strictly synthetic oil in the engines for years. They don't hold up for more than a few races, and tell me they don't hold up at all with conventional oil, they hate to pop an engine while racing. They really crank up the RPM'S in those motors. I started using Pennzoil synthetic for the last 8 years...used to be cheaper that Evinrude's or Merc's synthetic oils, but now it's the same price. I ran my 2000 model Ficht Ram engine for 1200 hours without a wrench touching it, and decided to buy a 2006 model Merc Opti in 2007 for my boat. I now have over 400 hours on it without a wrench touching it. May not be the oil, but I believe I will keep using the Penn. synthetic.

    Re: opti oil/ recommendation (lakebouef5)

    Exactly..
I think its just bad compressors but mercury probably won't admit it.Just like the shift shaft seal on the 3.0L Sport Master lower unit. Its been a pain in the butt ever since 98' and it still hasn't been fixed.

I'm not doubting what Mercury "Recommends"..But that doesn't mean you have to use it and that it will void your warranty if you don't use it.I'm just going by what i've used and still am using(Premium Plus).Plus what a 25yr Mercury Certified machanic has told me.
