Hi all, looking at buying a 225 HDPI an 04. Is there any known problems with this engine. I have always had Merc's and might be taking a turn to Yamaha.

Ensure it has the new updated oil pump
Look for play/abnormal wear where the steel tilt trim goes into the aluminum engine bracket.
+2, you should be able to get the serial# off the motor and call Yamaha, they will tell you if the oil pump was replaced. The original was factory recalled. Mine was not replaced when I bought it and took it to my local dealer and they replaced it under the recall.
Any Yamaha service center should be able to give you the entire warranty history of that engine with the serial number. The oil pump updated will need to have been done, and I would also look for any other major warranty issues (ie, replace power head, etc...). If there is no history other than the oil pump update (which was a factory recall/update for all the HPDI's), then you have a good one. If it's had a new power head, then you might want to dig deeper, but I think it was the early 250's that had most of the issues.
And as I understand it, if the oil pump was not updated previously, they will still do it now as it was a factory problem common to all the engines in a certain range.
Anyone know the details on this oil pump recall? I bought a 2006 200 HPDI just a little while ago. what years are part of the recall?
thanks

For engines up to the Series 2, if yours isn't Series 2 on the cowling then I think it needs the pump. Call customer service with your model /serial number and they'll tell you for sure, but I'm thinking Series 2 came out in 07.
