Problem with shifting into forward and reverse.

A few weeks ago I had to try a second time for my '05 250 HPDI to shift into reverse as it didn't "catch". I didn't think much about it until this weekend.

After launching, when I shifted into reverse, it actually went forward. When I put it in neutral, it still was going forward. It wouldn't shift into forward.

To solve it, I shut the engine off, shifted into forward, then reverse and then neutral. When I started the engine, it all worked fine for the rest of the day.
Has anyone else on here had this? Is this an indication I have a bigger problem that is getting worse?

No, I don't do drugs so don't go there.

Check under the cowling, sometimes the shift cable clamp gets unsnapped and the entire cable moves instead of just the inside part thats supposed to move.

I had something similar happen this past week. Shift linkage would be difficult to move into foward and somehow prevented neutral sensor from engaging and wouldn't let the starter engage. Discovered if I trimmed up to a certain position the linkage would free up as normal and engine would fire right up. When got home saw the clamp Jerry mentioned was open. I reinstalled it but linkage still stiff at most trim angles. Sometimes stiff in foward and other angles in reverse. Will try tomorrow disconnecting cable from shift linkage and see if its the cable or actually the shifting mechanism. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
