Nose cone was buired in mud. Had to put the hammer down to get the boat off.I was slinging mud and sand everywhere. Over heat alarm came on as soon as I got off of it.Motor was pissing red mud.Cut the engine off for a couple min. and restarted it ,did the same thing. The alarm finally stoped.My prop looks brand new after the sand buff but lower unit looks like it 10 years old.Is their anything I need to check on the lower unit since I know it was sucking sand???)Its a 07 250.

You probably need to replace the impeller. Then do a good flush out. Powering out of a situation like that can be fatal to an outboard.
Clean out the water passages as best as you can, and especially in the pressure relief valve area of the power head. Sand or mud in there will not let that part of the system function properly. New water pump is in order and remove the water intake screens (and clean them) looking for any mud that may restrict water flow behind the screens.
Just to be safe, check your prop thoroughly for any tiny cracks. Over time, tiny ones get big and then the blade slings. And stay away from sand bars!
Hook your motor up to a hose and let it flush. From there I would check your poppit valve. I'm sure sand and small stones are lodged in that area. If you don't clean them out your outboard will suffer from water pressure loss at low speeds or idle and you will get periodic alarms.
Remove your prop.
Go to a farm store (Southern States, Tractor Supply, etc) and purchase a 100 Gallon Rubbermaid Feeding / Water Tank. Fill it up with water and lower your lower unit in the water. Keep the hose running and start your motor -- this works better than the mouse ears and a hose. Let the motor run for a bit and rev the motor several times to see if you have the proper water pressure. If your water pressure seems fine then you are probably safe to keep your water pump and impeller the same for this year. I'd get the impeller changed out for sure if the water pressure is still low.
As for your lower unit getting repainted good luck. Many people have tried to repaint the lower unit and have not had success with the paint sticking for long periods. I did mine 2 years ago and mine still looks new. I lightly sanded the area -- primed it and painted several coats letting each dry for a long while. I finally sprayed mine with several coats of clear coat and let it sit for more than a week in the hot sun. Since then I have had very little if any wear of the new paint. If you do it right the paint should stick. If you just spray and go -- the paint will come off within your 1st 2 times on the water.

Question about the poppit valve?
Is that gasket a guaranteed replacement or is it possible to take off and use original. I'm having issues with low rpm overheating. I replaced impeller and housing as water pressure was low. Water pressure is now poor at low rpm , great at wot.

Yikes. Where were you on Wheeler when you did that? Check it over good. Buddy of mine fished FLW for a couple of years and did that with grass on Okeechobee. Thought it was good to go, but the motor blew within two months.

Your problem is the poppit valve. Take the housing apart and clean it out and your pressure will be good at low rpms. Mine did the same thing. The dealer changed my impeller, etc and said it was fixed. The first time back on the water I got the overheat alarm again whild running at low rpms.
I read the post about the poppit valve and did the repair myself. It was all mucked up....

Cleaned poppet valve , didn't find much, little bit of debris, anyrate cleaned it . alarm has not gone off after idling. Must have been it.

It does not take much that valve should be very clean to work properly.
