    1982 DT 25 Help Please

Ok, i just picked up this 25 horse from a guy locally.. here's the history.

They guy bought it 2 years ago, it ran fine, he put it away for a couple years and now it won't start. He rebuilt the fuel pump. I just broke the carb down soaked all the needles and jets an all the little parts in the carb and cleaned them all out real good, no blockages. I've got good compression, good spark and the fuel pump is working the filter isn't clogged.

Here's what it's doing. It's a pull start not electric. When i pull it over after i prime the bulb real good i can get it to fire, but not start. When i choke it when i pull it over the thing will backfire, but not start.

Suggestions please... the ice is leaving fast and i've got to get this thing running.

Aaron, did you try putting your hand over the carb while trying to start it? Sometimes by doing that, the extra suction will get it to start(puts more gas into the motor).

Hmm did not try that... here's an update... we farted around with it a little more, dumped some gas in the cylinders and adusted the jets and stuff on the carb. Got it to fire over very very well like it wants to start, but it just won't quite commit. It's so close i can taste it. My shoulder is a little sore from pulling that thing over about a hundred times

I had a 85 HP electric start,I don't know if the setup is the same as your 25,check on the left side of the motor (from the back) and check if there is a fuse holder there, check fuse, there maybe 2 of them. Make sure there OK. On mine it started like crap, found a blown fuse, replaced it started right up... Almost sounds like you have a broken reed in the intake..

I didn't see any fuses... i went through the whole wiring diagram 1 wire at a time and followed each of them every where... its' not electric start so there's not much for wiring on it.
As for the reeds, i pulled off the carb and i could see the upper set just fine, but i couldn't see the lower set, i didn't want to take that cover off further to check them cause i didn't have a new gasket. I'll keep plugging away at it.

Only other thing I can think of is you have a air leak somewhere, either in the gas line,or possibly the gasket between the carb and the block. When your turning it over, are the plugs wet with gas?

when i turn it over the plugs are wet with Gas. I had a leak in the fuel line and was sucking quite a bit of air, i got a new primer bulb and that all taken care of. The gasket between the carb and the outboard looks pretty good. It will still fire over VERY well but won't quite run.... it's very frustrating... i sure wish it had electric start, cause this pulling over stuff is getting quite sore.

Ok try this, check to see if the plug wires are on the wrong plugs. sounds like its electrical and not fuel. If that is not it and your getting good spark, try to just dry the plugs off, and put them back in. Maybe too much fuel, I've had that problem also. You didn't say if you have new plugs...good luck

    Re: 1982 DT 25 Help Please (suzuki_man)

well one plug wire is shorter than the other and it won't reach the bottom cylinder so that kind of eliminates that possibility. I do have good spark, that was the first thing i checked when i got it. I didn't get new plugs cause they look pretty decent and have good spark. I also checked and they are gapped right. I'll try drying them off and see what I come up with. It seems like if i could get it started once it would be fine... just like it needs the dust worked out of it after sitting for a while.

A lot of guys won't like this idea but wash the plugs off with starting fluid and then put a small squirt in each cylinder. Put the plugs back in, (still wet with starting fluid) and give it a try. Don't overdo the starting fluid.

Aaron: stupid question, are you sure the oil to gas mixture is right? I assume you have to mix them,if for some reason you have too much oil it would be real hard to get it started, especially a pull start... Hey I just trying to help, told you it was a stupid question....

I'm pretty sure, i mixed it up 50:1, i'll double check the manal to see if suzuki calls for something different.

Re: 1982 DT 25 Help Please (StetsonBasser)

Ok, here's the latest, i've sprayed starting fluid and carb cleaner into both the carb and the cylinders, again the same thing. After reading the troubleshooting guide in the clymer's book, i decided to check the fuel pump. Now when i pull the line off that goes to the carb from the pump and pull it over, gas comes out. But my question is, is that supposed to be a real strong stream of gas out fo that pump? Cause it'll come out, but not real strong. If i squeeze the primer bulb with that line off it the gas comes shooting out full force.

Here is a dumb question. Is your primer bulb good?
    God bless,

I"m not sure how that motor works,so this is a guess. I believe that the fuel pump works off of the compression of the motor. In other words, once running the compression is higher, stronger, thus pulls more gas into the carbs..

Have you checked the compression in both cylinders? They should be very close to each other (5-10% difference). Sometimes after sitting, a ring will stick and loose compression. Not sure what they are supposed to be, but I would guess at least 100 psi.

    Re: 1982 DT 25 Help Please (CHUCKV309)

it's running now, thanks for all your help.
It was the key between the flywheel and the crankshaft that had sheared off and the flywheel had turned just enough to throw it out of timing.
If anyone knows of a place where i can get a water pump kit for this motor. I've looked around a lot. I'm having an impeller overnighted to me so i can hopefully have it together for my first tournament on sat.
