    oil leaking around my prop.

I have a mercury xr4. I started it the other day on at my house with the muffs. After i shut it off i noticed oil leaking from under my prop, not through it. I recent changed my l.u. fluid with mercury premium checked that fluid lever still full and as blue as the day i put it in. I assume its 2 stroke oil? what needs to be done to fix this?

That is excessive. But your LU only holds a quart. Look, feel, smell the oil and compare to LU oil and 2 stroke oil. LU oil has a distinctive color and smell.

If you have quart of the black oil'ish stuff under your prop after you shut off that does seem excessive. More will be along to give you more precise info on that.

But as I understand it, it is normal for some black oil/gas mixture to come out the exhaust as it's the byproduct of the gas and 2-stroke oil burning/mixing in your engine and coming out your exhaust. It seems it's more prevelent when hooked on muffs and not really ran but idled.

    +1

Also... several other factors can contribute:

-If engine was "fogged"... there may be unburnt oil resident in the exhaust. This oil will begin to wash away (and exit the exhaust) when the engine is run.

-Fuel/Oil mixture that's unburnt (approximately 33% of the fuel/oil you put in the tank) comes out of the exhaust. After an engine has been sitting (with sooty/oily carbon buildup in the exhaust) for a period of time, it's not uncommon to see a nasty, black, oily mix exiting the exhaust (unburnt fuel is a solvent... and begins to strip away buildup in the exhaust).

The "sure" way to determine if there's a leak in the GEARCASE is to drain it, and PRESSURE TEST it.

BTW... strongly recommend Mercury or Quicksilver HIGH PERFORMANCE gear lube.

    Re: (EuropeanAM)

don i just put quicksilver high performace gear lube in it. i have ran my boat in the water yet, so it has been put in gear and the prop spin etc. i check the level its still full and the lube is still blue like iwhen i put it in. so can i assume it may quit doing this soon if it was bu8ld up of carbon? at the end of last season i just put seafoam in it and only ran a little of that gas out.

You're probably correct- however, I prefer not to make "assumptions".

thanks don, i fully agree with assumptions. i cannot find anywhere externally where it could be leaking anything.

Hey i am having kinda the same problem. But for me its not normal when you have unburnt oil out the prop thats not normal. There could be many severe problems then again it could be a plug not firing. Please check it out further before something else happens.
