1995 Johnson Faststrike problems

I have a 1995 Johnson Faststrike motor that has a problem. Here goes:
When I accelerate it seems to bog down and not get up on plane. Seems like it is starving for gas, but this is not a problem all of the time. There are times it does get up on plane and then there is the occasional "cutting out" on the motor. I know these motors eat power packs, but I want some advise on how to troubleshoot this problem without taking it to the shop. I have had this boat for about three weeks and am kinda out of cash, so any advise will help alot. The compresson is good on the power head, I run 89 octane gas and all connections on the motor are not loose. It acts like there is a fuel supply or loose connection issue, can this be a power pack problem. I am somewhat mechanicly inclined and can read and use a voltage meater. I am just not an outboard mechanic. Can anyone help?

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? What do the plugs look like? Have you ever changed the primer bulb? Just basic things to check before you go any futher... also.... maybe water in gas......

Thanks for the input, now I have some things to check. Its a start to the troubleshooting. FUN FUN Stuff, I would rather be fishin!!!!

Also, check your timing advance cam roller under top cover, roller should touch cam, cured same problem on my 96 faststrike, Rusty can post a pic of it.
