boat rims help!!

im looking for nice flashy chrome rims for my boat not black with machined aluminum my bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2 the guy at tire barn says does any one know if i can fit a 14 inch rim under my finderwell there is very little spaceing allowed under there i know i could go to a low profile tire but im affraid that if i put the 14 inder there with the low profile it will rub the fender well does any one have any knowledge about this ?????

yea that web site is like the only one who has rims that will fit i still wish i could find chrome i like the black and chrome but i dont think it would look good since i have 20 XDs on my truck then have black and aluminum on my boat it black and aluminum would look good on my boat since its white and grey im just gonna have to bite the bullet and make a decision i think

If you'd be so kind to allow me to offer a little insight from what I've learned from doing mine, I'll pony up the information your looking for, just contact me.

I can tell you right now it's absolutely possible to do what you want, it just won't be inexpensive and it won't be as easy as just bolting them on.

I started a complete ground up restoration on my 92 Javelin and also wanted nice rims and tires on the trailer just like you. You can see the entire thread in the restoration forum, there's some trailer pics that you may find helpful.

I also have 20" Chrome XD Monsters on my truck and wanted nice chrome rims for the trailer. I was told by one tire/rim professional after the other there's no way to get a cool looking set of rims to fit on my trailer..........Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

I originally wanted to put matching XD's on my trailer and was told by everyone I talked to there was no way in hell to do that.............Again, Riiiiiiiiiight!

After being told at every turn it was impossible to fit those on my trailer I finally gave up on matching the trailer rims to the truck and started a very long search for an alternative rim and tire package. I eventually found ones that were similar enough to my XD's and I just couldn't stay away from even after I learned it WAS possible to install the chrome XD Monsters on my trailer.

My new AR's were just installed last week and I think they look pretty nice. Oh yeah! I went through some major headaches (which you can read about in the thread) and expense to make them fit; but I learned a ton about installing aftermarket rims and tires on boat trailers. I also learned that almost everyone I talked to "the professionals" about doing this, had absolutely NO idea what they were talking about!

As you can see, there's no fenders on the trailer, I'm still hunting those down. It's just one of the expenses you'll incur if you choose to install wider rims and tires...........Maaaaaybe!

If you truly want cool rims, go for it! Just make sure you have your wallet sufficiently primed and a big bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol close by!

If you just can't live without matching XD's, it's absolutely possible and I almost did it just to prove all the naysayers wrong.

If you have additional questions about some other options as far as rims go, I learned allot doing this and can point you in the right direction and maybe even save you a little grief. I'm more than willing to help just let me know.

Man I truly wish it were that easy.......IT'S NOT!

Let me start by saying, I have a dual/tandem axle trailer and that makes all the difference in the world when considering a swap like this.

I absolutely would think twice, three times, and maybe even ten times about installing a wide rim and tire package on a single axle trailer. Wide tires on a single axle trailer tow like crap and can be very dangerous. If you installed the 18" X 9" XD rim, by the way, that was the smallest rim I could get to use in the chrome XD Monsters with my bolt pattern of 6 X 5.5". You'd be looking at a minimum tire size of at least a 255/45/18 tire to fit that rim. And quite possibly even a wider tire such as a 275 or more! Remember you're talking about using a rim that's really desinged for a truck, not a trailer.

Just do to the high LB rating you will need on a single axle trailer tire to properly and safely support your load, you better do your homework. You will need a tire rated for the upper limits in the weight rating or a "C" rated trailer tire so your tire can safely support your baby. The sidewalls on many car rated tires are too soft and you could suffer serious ramifications from selecting a tire without the proper sidewall strength to do the job. I did find one Michelin tire that had a really, really strong sidewall and I almost chose it for my trailer. They were a pretty penny each but they were an awesome tire. I believe it was one of the Michelin Pilot series tires, I can find out for sure if you'd like the specifics?

I'd recommend you consider several factors before making your decision to switch to a wider rim and tire package:

1. Do you have a single axle or dual axle trailer?
2. What pound (LB) are your axles rated for, 2000lb, 2500lb, 3500lb? If you have a dual axle trailer, are they both rated the same???? Mine weren't!
3. If your axle is a 3500lb rated axle, does your axle (s) have a tapered shaft to accept a different hubb with possibly a different bolt pattern?
4. Are you willing to go through the headache and expense of cutting off your quite possibly perfect condition fenders and replacing them with new ones? And that's if you can find the right size and width fender to properly cover your new tires to begin with.

You must do your homework up front on the fenders or you'll end up fenderless. I know the widest fenders I found were 10 3/4" and those were for a dual axle/tandem trailer and I don't know if they have them in a single axle fender. And believe me, you will need all 10 3/4" of that fender to cover that wide of rim and tire!

basswacker5, are you really prepared to fork out some SERIOUS coin to do this, because ANY way you look at it, it's gonna be expensive!

If you want XD rims to match your trucks chrome XD's, you'll have to get at least a size 18" X 9" with a -12mm offset to get them to fit on your trailer.

Wait!.........Wait!..................Wait for it!..........I know it's coming from all those that are sitting there biting their tounges and just can't wait to pipe in and tell you you need a 0mm offset rim on your trailer............confuscious say............Not so!

Now, if you have the chrome XD "Rockstars" and not the Monsters, then you can get a 18" X 9" in a 0mm offset. I will tell you right up front that although that sounds awesome!.........It's not!

Remember your adding extra width to the rim size and this will encroach on the amount of space you have right now between your trailer fender and the boat, so it may not fit at all. See what I mean about doing your due diligence and about having that bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol close by?

There's truly a ton of things to seriously consider in your quest to install those "Bling" rims on your boat trailer.

It may sound like I'm trying to discourage you.....Absolutely not! I just don't want you to think this is gonna be a walk in the park or as easy as just removing your old fenders and bolting some wide skins on and then throwing some new wider fenders back on. It ain't gonna be that easy!

Here's the rims that were my second choice after the AR 893's. The Brand is Vision and the model is the Legend 5-142's. They come in a 17", 5 X 4.5" bolt pattern with a "0" zero offset and will bolt right on to your trailer. They are awesome rims and the quality is outstanding. They may have other sizes and offsets available but these were a simple bolt on without having to change hubbs and bolt patterns.
