    How old is this deer?

On January 9th, I was able to get a road kill deer through the police dept in the city where I work. She hadn't been down 30 minutes when I got to her. Since it was in the middle of a roadway and I didn't have a knife, etc. to gut her out, I just got her home and hung her up (by the hind legs). Gutted her out into a trash barrel. Started at the hind end with a 12"-14" long incision, and this is what popped out at me. This baby deer was about 5" long and was detailed enough to tell it was a male. Any idea how old this baby buck is? Also, how long is the average gestation period for a doe?

Dunno but I'm pretty sure that's the very 1st time this Q has been asked on BBC. Did you try Googling deer gestation charts?
Some people are so judgemental. You can tell just by looking at 'em.--Some random meme

Put it in alcohol (or whatever) and save it - you're probably one of the only people on the planet with one like that

not quite so, i killed a handful of does last year in illinois in the late shotgun that had babies. It's sad yes, but at the same time it's the whole theory behind shooting does, controlling the herd. seen 7 of the little ones like that. very neat none-the-less

Gestation is about 180 days....hair over 6 months...Its tough to age those little buggers without a fetal chart....and you have to measure them head down, to roughly end of rump, then look at a chart, etc...been a while since we did any of them, and to be honest, can't recall what the measurements would equate out too....

I live in VA. Three of the counties that I hunt have an extended season for does which runs through the end of March. I always check to see how many fetuses each doe was carrying. The fetuses are usually about an inch or two by the end of December. Our rut peaks around Nov 10th every year. In January the fetuses are around 5 to 6 inches. February fetuses are more like 8 inches. By the end of March they are much bigger. Our does almost always have at least two fetuses and occasionally three.

    Re: (chwebmaker)

Had a similar episode a couple years back during Illinois late doe season which is in January. When field dressing the doe , I knew things just didnt look right. Well what we found was that she was pregnant with twins. Like this pic you could seen the hooves forming, and we could tell that one was a buck and the other a doe. Sad but neat all if that makes any since....

I have it vaccuum sealed in the freezer. Can I still put it formaldehyde after it has been frozen?

don't see why not, but i'm pretty sur they don't use formaldehyde anymore. If you can get some I don't see why it wouldn't still work.
