    Dog/Basement Question

    Dog/Basement Question

Have a 2 year old Chesapeake Bay Retrivier that I am fixing up a kennel for in my basement. She has been kept in a dog crate in the kitchen for the 2 weeks I have had her and she is primarily an indoor dog. Previous owner kenneled her has well during the day and let her out from time-to-time to do her stuff, so she is use to the cold and does not seem to mind it for the short time she spends outside in it.

My question is this: How cold is to cold for her to spend the day in the basement while I am at work?

I put a thermometer down there today and it showed averaged between 45-55 degrees throughout the day. Being mostly an inside dog is this that to cold for her to be there all day. I know she is bread to handle cold and cold water, but I am worried the shock will not be good for her. I am putting a nice warm dog bed down there for her as well so she is up off the concrete floor too. Is this enough or should I put a small space heater down there for her as well and keep it on low for her?

Overthinking this I am sure, but what say you all...

45 is plenty warm with a dog bed but how is your basement getting that cold? Ground temps are normally above 55 degrees so you must have some cold air coming in?
Some people are so judgemental. You can tell just by looking at 'em.--Some random meme

Re: Dog/Basement Question (BP in ME)

Basement for the most part is 1/2 above ground and 1/2 on the ground and takes up only 1/2 the 1/2 with the other 1/2 being a crawl space. Walls are made of cender block and has 1 normal door and 1 sliding door.

She will be fine down there at 45 degrees. I'd rather have that than too warm for a dog. A dog can deal with way more cold than they can heat. She has a triple layer coat so she will be plenty warm at 45 degrees.

Just put something soft for her to lay on and some water with her and she will be in hog heaven.

Chessies will take a lot of fowl weather amazing meat dogs for waterfowling!

I think that if you have a pad so she is up off the cement floor for sleeping and resting she will be fine.
