    Lower unit question

What is the difference in the internals of the sporty vs the tm. I know a sporty can reach massive speed but my tm is only rated to 85.

    Re: Lower unit question (B_Thompson)

No real difference on the gears they are interchangable, it is the gear case shape that makes the difference, One is more for fishing and better suited to carry a load, the other (sporty) is more for the faster boats due to it's profile.

Only internal difference is the propshaft (which actually is interchangeable, just a material difference).

Well if there is no difference in internals then can I push my TM above its max and be ok. I hit 83 this weekend and probably still had more and that is with a prop I never run. I want to hit 90 just not to cause damage doing it.

No, that's really not an accurate statement- and I'm going to offer a STRONG word of caution.

The Torquemaster Gearcase is designed for speeds BELOW 85 MPH. Due to the case hydrodynamics, stability can be compromised at speeds above 80... and ESPECIALLY at speeds approaching or exceeding 85 MPH.

The concern is not with the internal "mechanical" components- but rather with safety and stability. Gearcase blowout can be a very ugly experience!

IF your hull is capable of speeds above 85 MPH (and ONLY if)... a Sportmaster would be a more suitable choice.
