    Power Cooling c.1992 OMC V6

On my 1992 Evinrude 225-HP V6, the engine cooling system incorporates a valve linked to the throttle. I believe this is called "Power Cooling".

What was the intention of this valve arrangement? I believe it affected the engine running temperature at speeds below about 2,000-RPM.

I think this feature was re-designed on later models of this V6, as the valve seems to be gone
from the starboard side of the engine block on newer engines.

Is it possible to re-fit a c.1992 engine's cooling system to the newer non-Power Cooling design?

If a re-fit is possible, would you recommend it?

    Hi Rusty,

My 1992 Evinrude runs quite well. It only has about 250 hours of use. But I am always game to make improvements. If a few dollars and few hours will make the cooling system better, I am all for it.

Here is my motor, cruising along on Northern Lake Michigan recently.

And another view, this one from Lake Charlevoix. This motor is in great shape,
but I just want to make it a little better, if possible!

    jimh,
I have the same setup on my 92 Johnson 200. Seems like the waer only trickles out until I give it a little throttle. Not sure how it works but if there is something that Will help improve it I'm all game. Rusty if you come across that prat number please let us know.

    Great looking engine!

I pull most of this stuff off the top of my head, this one will require more than that....

I have a full plate the rest of the week, I will try to get the information posted.

There is an OLD GUY that will be able to post this information and he has it at his at his fingertips....Seahorse, can you help a youngster out?

    Great looking motor.

This sounds like you are unsure about the year?

    Jim,

The whole OMC V-6 engine block was redesigned in 1993 to a closed deck system with different t'stats and they added a "blow off" valve plus finger ports and a lot of internal changes. This was also the first of the Oceanrunner-Ocean Pro series.

Your Power Boost cooling worked well after they got rid of the "long nose" white thermostats that would stick inside the rubber seal ring and overheat the motor (somewhere around '88 or so) The newer black round nose t'stats worked fine. The only real problem with your system was someone kinking the formed water hose that came off the bottom of the throttle water valve, and sometimes the seal would leak from that valve. Other than that, the system worked OK. You could add all those springs, diaphrams, venatherms and plastic housing to convert the system, as some replacement powerheads had, but it wasn't worth the cost of all the parts compared to what you have.
