Fuel restriction?

I posted up about a fuel problem I was having where the motor just started to sputter and die and was sucking the fuel bulb flat. I did some playing around with it last weekend and at WOT, it will suck the bulb flat and die. However, if I hold the RPM's to around 4300, it runs fine. I replaced the fuel bulb a while back, is it possible I don't have the correct one and it is limiting the flow, or do I go further back toward the tank looking for the problem? I checked the fuel line to see if it was pinched or kinked, it wasn't. Thanks for the help, Boog

If you did not get a BRP fuel bulb I would replace it with one.

I would also check the anti siphon valve at the fuel tank.

Sounds like the anti syphon valve from a past experience. But do not forgo Rustys advice on the Bomb fuel bulb. On top of the tank will be one or two elbows depending if you have one or two tanks. These elbows have a little ball check valve in them, take em out and replace with a regular ell and it shoud alleviate your problem. Hope this helps!

Anti-siphon valves are installed on marine fuel systems for a reason. If the one you have is deemed defective replace it with another unit.....do not just install an EL fitting.

Bassmeister - Your engine shouldn't run any different.

Engine manufacturers design the fuel system knowing it is going to be there but would rather not have to deal with an anti-siphon valve as it has negative effects on liquid/vapor ratio of the gasoline being delivered to the engine. The USCG has a different opinion though. In the event of a bad situation (fire,crash,etc) the anti-siphon valve is in place to prevent just what its name implies....fuel siphoning out of tank and into places it shouldn't be (bilge....water....fire....).

Kyle, I see your point and that is something that needs futher study on my part. I deemed the as valve as a check valve to keep the prime to the motor intact and not as a safety item. Altho I don't see it keeping flames from entering the tank, in an extreme situation. However Welcome to the boards!!

I just had a similar experience with my 2003 150 Johnson yesterday. Runnning along and it just quit like it ran out of fuel. Checked the bulb and it was soft. Pumped it up and the motor started right up. When I took off it ran for about 10 secs. and did the same thing. Bulb was soft again. I had to keep pumping the bulb while my partner drove the boat to the ramp. Does this sound the the same problem??

hondajohn,
sounds to me like your problem is an air leak like from a bad fuel bulb or hole in the line. If the bulb is going soft it is losing it's prime. Check for pinholes in your line, around clamps, or lose fittings. Boog

Or fuel pump gone bad? Usually the antisyphon valve will give a horn above 4500 rpms but when you dropbelow that it will run fine!

Thanks!! I thought that since it was sucking the fuel out of the bulb that it was an indication that the pump was OK.
I was looking at the Service Manual for the motor and it says to push the hoses to get them off of all the connections on the motor. Pardon my ignorance, but how can you get the hoses off if you push on them rather than pull??

OK Claude, I am still lost. Explain to me exactly how to put the hose away from a connection. What is the difference if I grab the hose at the connection and "push" it away or "pull" it away. I don't think I am stupid, but I just don't understand how you do that.
