HELP reinstalling lower unit 225 Pro XS

Don, I need some guidance please. I pulled my lower unit today to replace the water pump impellor and plate. That went fine. My issue is I can get the lower unit back in all the way? No matter what I do? I can get it to start to go over the studs and then that’s it. It's about 3/4" from going all the way in.

    What am I doing wrong?

Also make sure your shift shaft is lined up too, read these instructions and you should be able to get it... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/sttipswp2.htm

Is the shift shaft the small shaft infront of the drive shaft?

When I was at the dealer getting my lower unit replaced he had me bump the starter a couple of times, with the kill switch pulled of course.

If it's 3/4" that you lack.... odds are that it's the shift shaft that's misaligned. You'll likely have to reach into the opening ABOVE the gearcase mounting surface (at the front of the engine), and MANUALLY "steer" the shift shaft into the shift shaft coupler (it will tend to "miss" the coupler when left to it's own tendency).

I will tackle this tonight when I get home from work. I did reach in and align the shift shaft. I will try putting in forward and turning the prop as in Sherms instructions or pull the plugs and turn flywheel.

NEVER and I mean NEVER use the starter to move the crank for aligning the drive shaft. That's nothing more than a big accident waiting to happen. Either put the lower in gear and rotate the prop shaft or pull the plugs and rotate motor by hand, that's the right way. If you've got a buddy handy that makes it even easier. Trying to man handle the L/Unit and rotate the motor, while pushing up on the L/U and aligning the shift shaft at the same time is a hand full and dangerous.

Thanks for all the help. I pulled the plugs and had my buddy turn flywheel and the lower unit dropped right into place. Ran her and all is set
