You do have a voltage regulator. I would not run the motor until the over voltage problem is resolved. Allot of electrical/electronic components do not do well with high voltages!

Get your engine in to your local Authorized Mercury Dealer asap.
Repair will LIKELY require replacement of the Alternator (although all connections to the alternator, INCLUDING THE GROUND STRAP, should be checked/tested).

I had the same issue a couple years ago. Volts would spike for a millisecond tripping the alarm. Alternator swap was the ticket for mine.
