    Tournament practice log

I have a little technique that I use for club tournaments on local lakes. I keep a scratch pad in the glove box of the boat and everytime I catch a fish I mark the location on the GPS, write down the date, water temp, weather, time of day, bait used, and the length of the fish. I'll sometimes fish local lakes 4-5 days per week. A few days before a tournament I'll go through my scratch pad and GPS, put a month or so worth of data into a spreadsheet and print it out. It's hard to remember exactly what bait you were using at what time of day and where you were a month down the road, but with the spreadsheet it's usually possible to establish a decent pattern. It's also extremely helpful if your partner can't get to the lake as often as you. Give him the spreadsheet a week before the tourney and let him practice based off of your info. It may sound too analitical, but it works!

Shineeki Fukai (sp?) in the FLW tour has a etch a sketch where he records everything, guess he later transfers it to a log book.

    Re: Tournament practice log (VictorM.)

Andy being serious about the practice log. I use to keep a very detailed log and even got to the point where I carried a micro recorder in my pocket when I fished so I could get down even the smallest of details..I figured out later on I was starting to hurt myself by doing this..The reason..I started fishing memories.I started showing up at every tournament with a detailed plan and I wouldn't alter from that plan no matter what. The problem was come tournament day a week later or even a few days later weather patterns water conditions and even the fish would have changed. Still I was staying to what I had drilled into my head from all the notes and details I had gathered pre-hand and was just not making adjustments on the water or fishing the conditions for that day..More times than not it burned me rather than help me..Sure your going to have a few areas that are going to be consistent and replenish with fish but don't get to the point where you lock yourself in on game plan so tight based on old information that you start to over look the obvious...Learn to gather your information when prefishing that's your best bet to a more reliable bite on tourament day..

    Re: Tournament practice log (Robert)

Victor brings up a good point...did the same thing myself and studied myself out of a good tournament. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a note book! I am a note taking fool and that could come in handy as long as you don't lock yourself into a "bad" pattern when weather and conditions change....GOOD TIP!!!

Yall are right. If i only prefish a day for a T I do better than if I prefish 4 days. I will admit to getting screwed by living in the past.
