Don ...Prem plus vs Penzoil plus

My buddy said there wasnt a difference from the two. Is this so? The acadamy had Penzoil plus for about half what a gallon of prem plus sells for. Is there any reason why I shouldnt run the Penzoil oil in my 225 EFI. Thanks for the clarification. Is there any difference between the two oils???

This is a loaded question, you will get many answers.
Here's my thought, if your motor is under warranty use the factory oil.
My other thought is, any oil that is certified TCW III will do the job.
I have used the Pennzoil P P in my last 3 Merc motors after the warranty was done with no issues.

Yeah.... that's a loaded question. Always brings a ton of opinions....

Best suggestion is to read your engine owner's manual. Refer to the oil recommendations section.... read what it says, and make a wise decision based on what's listed.

There's one often overlooked "detail" in the oil question, however: "If the oil you choose to run CAUSES an "oil quality related failure" in your engine... will the manufacturer of that oil BACK their oil and repair your engine with OEM parts and labor through the OEM's dealer network?

That's the guarantee you get with Mercury or Quicksilver oils.

Why do you think it is 1/2 the price? That alone say's a lot. Quality fuel and Oil are cheap insurance for very expensive motors.

My personal opinion, but when I start seeing Pennzoil motors on the water, I will then think about using their oil. If my Merc fails using other than Quicksilver I would not expect Mercury to honor any warranty issues with the powerhead. JMO.

When did Mercury start making oil?

Do you know what company makes Mercury oil?

Mercury has their formula mixed at several oil companies.

Just saying.

just saying........ I'm not going to take a chance on a product that I feel could harm my investment. Not to say Pennzoil is bad for an engine, but a few dollars saved on a gallon of oil is not a risk I want to take.
As for who makes Mercury oil- don't know, don't care- as long as there is "Quicksilver" on the label. Mercury even had batches of "bad oil" back in the days of tank mixing, but took care of the customers who had problems from it. Quality is the issue at hand for me; just as I would not buy my Trilene from the food mart where it has been on the shelf for two years just to save a dollar or two.

The reason Mercury oil is twice as much is because they are screwing you. I bet just about everyone on here including the one that believe only in Mercury oil don't go to the Chevy dealer and buy genuine GM oil. I would not use a oil that was not a good name brand and have the proper ratings but other than that it will be fine.

I have never seen a failure due to "BAD" oil. I have seen failures from lack of oil.
YOUR MERCURY OWNERS MANUAL STATES, ANY 2 CYCLE OIL THAT IS TCW III RATED.

I'm not trying to change your mind on what oil you want to use.

I just think $30.00-35.00 a gallon is alot for a certain "color" of oil.
Why is FACTORY oil as costly as it is?
The oil company makes it's money on the gallon of 2 cycle oil from the FACTORY that orders it. Then the FACTORY that odered it has to make money on that gallon of oil, and that cost is YOUR'S.

Like I said before, if your motor is under factory warranty and you are worried about it, run FACTORY oil.

Also. here's another thought.
I use 10-15 gallons of 2 cycle oil a year. The savings from using another oil pays for my yearly maintenance costs.

Re: Don ...Prem plus vs Penzoil plus (JAZII)

Next time you have your Merc serviced, have the tech remove the exhaust divider plate and take a look at what's there. With good oil and gas -hope you don't use the cheapest gas you can find too- there won't be a build-up. With inferior oils, there will be a crusty sludge similar to what you find in car engine valve covers using Quaker State.
Nuff said- I'm out the door, going fishing! So use anything you want- I'm not paying for yours, only mine.
G'day.

Re: Don ...Prem plus vs Penzoil plus (rdc5445)

All I have to do is look at my prop.
I do not have to have my Merc tech look at the exhaust divider plate, I have been inside and out of most of my motors.
I service my own motors.
Some oils are not CHEAP, some oils are just OVER PRICED.

rdc5445,

Get you some samples of oil and send them off for analysis.

Why do you think mercury has the quickleen product? Because the oil burns dirty!

Mercury doesn't make oil, nor does quicksilver. Citgo (last time i checked) makes their oil. The 10 dollar per gallon citgo marine oil is the SAME as Merc oil.

I have run just about every oil through my 250XB (and it uses a bunch). They are a super rich running motor and carbon up very easy. I've gotten to see first hand on this motor which ones run cleaner. Also call and talk to Tony Brucato who cleans marine injectors.

But i will agree, if you're motor is under warranty, run whats suggested. Its against the law for Merc not to cover you if the oil you were using meets the specs, but thats just more leverage for them.

For sure!

One other note.... when comparing MSDS sheets on any liquid product, we must be cautious about using the words "SAME" and "IDENTICAL" (if there are any components listed as "Proprietary Blend" or "Proprietary Mixture").

That's a technical term for "mystery components".

Kirch77, That is kind of like saying ARCO gas will be fine. There a little more to.

Don't know about the larger engines but I used Pennzoil in my 1995 75 HP engine till this summer (the whole 15 years) when I sold it. I never changed the plugs or winterized it ever. It never failed to start one time. It turned over and started the first crank this spring...it was cold natured though but ran like a top. I would like to think that all Mercury motors would perform like that but...reading this forum makes you think they're ready to blow up any minute and 10 hours on a motor is an ancient Merc .

My new 200 though, I'm kinda stuck with using the DFI oil in it. I wonder if it really makes that much of a difference? I don't know but it's a lot of money to me to not use the DFI oil and take the chance

Re: (jowens)

I have a good friend that has been racing and building Mercury motors for 25 or more years. He works in the lab at a local plant. He took Mercury Premium Plus, and Pennzoil Premium Plus to the lab and did a viscosity, flash point, and carbon residue test on both oils. The Pennzoil beat the Mercury oil in all three test. He said they were close but the Pennzoil was best by a small margin in all three test. In his opinion the Pennzoil is just as good as the Mercury.

This is what Jay Smith on the 2.5 high performance board say about it.

You Pennzoil guys are so hung up on saving a buck, do you also use Champion spark plugs instead of NGK's- they're cheaper you know.
