    Re: 3.0 crankshaft sensor (basspastor)

Please identify your 3.0L engine a little more specifically (preferably including the engine serial number).

In general, the crankshaft position sensor is a sensor that sends signals to the PCM or ECU, notifying the PCM or ECM of the crankshaft's exact position.

    Re: 3.0 crankshaft sensor (basspastor)

The primary purpose is to tell PCM when the motor is at top dead center for timing and rpm calculations. There are several ways to test it.

!. With a DSO (digital storage oscilloscope) the best way
Minimum of 8 volts peak to peak ac signal for inductive type sensors (two wire)
Three wire type (hall effect) will have square wave with a peak voltage depending
on design. Most common being 5, 8 or 12 volts, in that order.

    2. Digital voltmeter. Minimum 4 volts when cranking for all two wire inductive type.
Hall switch type (three wire) turn the motor over slowly by hand and the meter
should switch form 0 to the designed voltage shown above.

    3. Ohmmeter. 500 to 1500 ohms. You really need manufactures specs. to be accurate this way. Many manufactures do not provide a ohm. spec. but if it falls with in this range it is probably good. This is really not a good test but will get the job done most of the time.

As far as I know all the earlier 3.0 motors are a 2 wire inductive type sensor. I don't know if any outboard manufacture has gone to 3 wire hall type yet.

How about it Don, have they?

Thanks to both of you; this will help me in my diagnostic test.

Leon.... I'm not aware of any three wire crank (VR) sensors.

The resistance on later 3L (555 based) crank sensors should be "Greater than 200 ohms".
