The Glastron HPV 170

Hi guys,
I'm Shawn.D , after lurking around here and getting most of the ideas from my boat rebuild I figured I'll post mine too. 1985 Glastron HPV 170 with a 175 Johnson, painted several colors but after I purchased it I kept finding surprises after surprises. Foolish me for discovering BBC AFTER I BOUGHT THE BOAT!

Anyways, I parked it in the garage and started working just before the snow started falling.
23 with no clue, I'm glad a place like BBC exist because around here (Qc Canada) There is little known about bass boats and rebuilding them.
I have to say my first attempt at rebuilding the stringers was a fail! Used the wrong fiberglass, then came the pondering of maybe selling the boat? I figured I started the job not f'ing finish it.. So I ripped it all out again!

SECOND TIME AROUND
I took the cap off this time trimmed everything I needed too and used epoxy resin this time around, SO MUCH BETTER! Also I was told it sticks better to older material.





Then the rebuilding part, learning about the famous mixture that is "peanut butter" .






I then put the front cap back on. Took six of my firiends to put it back on, though we were only 2 to take it off hahaha...




Received some seats in the mail from someone on the board. Not too sure what his username is anymore but I'm sure he'll see this.


Now I've started to work on the transom and its going very well a lot of trimming, just to get it to fit perfect and I'll be rounding the edges to have the glass go over smooth.

So Yeah! I'll update this thread, I work in a warehouse and do major hours so.. I work on it when I can.

Can't wait to have it on the water! I'm trying to have the boat sanded and painted by march to have April to reinstall everything.. Red with a gunmetal stripe and a mushroom/beige/tan interior is the plan for the moment.

Man Shawn, you're about 40 years younger than me, and you've got a PROJECT on your hands I don't envy you a bit. Now if I was your age, I might tackle something like that. Good luck with that.

boat is looking great. i wish i still had the pictures of my 78 HPV-170 i redid. they didnt change the style of that boat much if at all through the years. its a big project as mine was too but its all worth it in the end. i wish i had the dual consol like yours. keep up with the pics its good to see someone else as crazy as i was to restore one of these boats you just dont see many around any more

Now time for a updated,
the transom is in! Not completely glassed yet but I'm getting there.

Started by trimming my transom to fit properly, I found all the hardware I would need to sandwich my brace and the transom together and mocked everything up. Also drilled my holes through the transom and through the brace.





I also test fitted the rear en of the cap back on to see if it still fits and its really close.






After I got all my tools and I didn't need anything else, I started.
Took the mocked setup apart, placing all my hardware and tools within reach and used epoxy resin between the layers of transom.
I mixed a peanut butter batch and evenly applied it to the transom skin, I then pressed the transom into its resting place with 1 bolt holding it to the skin, then bolted the brace to the transom/skin and worked tightening the bolts from the bottom up.




Once that was done I had to run around and look for a nail gun, because I want to follow the original lay out and the way it was built I figured using tacks wouldn't hurt so I did.



Now that was all done yesterday, right before leaving for work this morning, I took the hardware off and then the brace and here's what it looks like.




I have a little bit of sanding to do..

I'm very dumped to have a transom in what used to be a gaping hole, its made the read end of the boat rock hard and I don't even have it glassed in yet!
Loads of work left to be done on it , I also have loads of work to do at my job, march is the busiest time of the year for us.
Will I get the boat painted in time for March31st? Stay tuned.

looking forward to updates. Yes peanut butter mix is critical when laying then stringer to the hull and also transom.
I noticed you had previous rebuilt the transom due to wrong fiberglass?

My first attempt redoing the stringers was a failure.
I was using polyester resin and after using the West system epoxy product and their pumps I'll never use polyester for repairs again.

shawn i saw you said you wanted some pics of the transom area. here are a couple that i have if you want any other shots let me know and i will take them for you. these are from before i decapped the boat.

when we made the front seats we went and got some foam from a craft store and stapled the covers to the bottom on the base i had to cut out. we are planning on redoing all the seats in vinyl this spring so i will get better pics. but here is how mine turned out for a temp seat.

Thanks again, I'm hoping to work on the boat tonight, I've been working insane shifts at work and I'm not done quit yet, friday, monday tuesdays are crazy... 15hour shifts...

ya they are for sure a pain in the.... i ended up getting new weather seal from a local marine store and making my own seals. the ones that were on the boat let water in all the time.i used a weather stripping with the stick on backing and that seems to keep most of the water out.

Morning BBC,
Though I haven't updated much,I have been working on the boat, mostly sanding and then last night I got to lay down some 24 ounce fiberglass on the transom.
I had never worked with this thickness before and let me tell you, it takes a lot of resin to saturate it!!!!! About4 times as much.. Which makes sense..
I did one layer of 24 followed by a layer of 6.






I've also began cutting the pieces that will tie the stringers to the transom with Easter weekend coming which means I have Friday night and Sunday to work on the boat I will have the transom completed.( I'll be working Saturday ....)

Morning ! After a long windy weekend filled with boat and job related work I've got pictures of what I've been up to!
I've completed the transom ! I forgot to take a picture of the end product but here are a few of the piecing together and glassing.





I'm very happy. But unfortunately I'm starting a cold now...
I have some floor boards I have to glass in and I'll have the rear done.

I'll update tomorrow with pictures !

Morning, I wanted to give you guys a update on the boat without a picture..
Now I sanded and added 4 layers of 6 ounce glass on each side of the transom, I have someone on another board who had mentioned that I should add a brace on each side but after test fitting the rear part of the cap back on the splash well wouldn't let me add pieces ( it occupies the space)
Now the rear cap needs extreme work, right before I took the cap off I knew it was going to be impossible to simply slap it back on because it had twisted with the transom being so weak.. Now I had to cut it in 3 pieces and I'll be placing it glassing it then turning it upside down and working from underneath to rebuild the glass.
My next immediate step is to paint the bilge area. I'm still undecided, truck bed lining or paint(specific fiberglass one not just any..)

Hi guys, sorry I haven't updated anything, work has been busy..

The work that has to be done to the cap is extensive..
Loads of sanding and adjusting.
I've also had to replace some wood that was rotten.
So the Top cap is moving ahead very slowly.

The bilge area is painted I used bed liner, rolled it on easy and it covers very well. I'm happy with how it turned out and I installed the gas tank.
I'll cover it all up with a cloth so that I don't get any resin or dust on it.




I've also been using what little time I have had getting my gear ready. Attached a photo of that.
