I was gonna just paint it with topside paint but I really wanna spray the top and bottom in one shot. And not sure if the paint will hold up on the bottom. Sounds like gelcoat is cheaper and will hold up better then paint? I just need some input what people have heard or experinced. And also was wondering about the gloss how new and shinny it will come out. Thanks! Oh ya gonna go straight black on the whole thing.
Just did my bottom in gloss black due to some rock damage. Gel coating is a lot of work if you want good results.
Fix all damage
sand the entire area with 240
wipe clean with lacquer thinner
prime
sand
spray 3 coats of gelcoat
sand with 240
sand with 400
sand with 600
sand with 800
sand with 1200
sand with 1500
sand with 3000
buff and your done
comes out as smooth as glass

PS I didn't do the work but helped while the shop did it
I did the same type of repair but the order i did things was different. If you have a big scrape or gouge, I would use 80-120 and really roughen it up, scuff the rest with 180. Clean with Acetone and apply gel-coat. I think Im mixing about 12-16 drops per ounce of gel-coat. Cover with anything, waxpaper, clear tape, etc. Let dry 24hrs. Come back and sand with 320, then 600, then 1000 and then 1500 and buff. If you want to do 3000 then thats fine but I feel good compound will take the place of 3000 and you will have to use it anyway. Also if your gelcoat looks pretty good after its dried, you might be able to get by with 600 grit on up. Just my 2 cents. G
