    to restore or not

    Hello everyone,

I just recently bought a 1994 stratos 284 pro xl the boat is structurally sound, no leaks or what not, and the motor runs like a champ. The paint and carpet and some minor apperance issues are in need of some tlc. My question is there a benifit to restoring a boat of this nature. I fish tournaments and i have looked at some newer boats but to get one like I would like would run me over 40k and I am weary of buying used boats.

Re: to restore or not (284_PRO_XL)

If it is a boat that you really like, go for it. The main issues to look for in a boat that old, are the transom and floor. Check them over real good to get a good feel for their condition. A transom going south normally gives you some indications, such as serious stress cracks in the splashwell area. Tilt the motor up until it is about 18" off the ground, grab onto the lower unit and lift up and down. Have someone watch for any movement of the transom. Also look at the transom die downs and drain plugs, for signs of damage. These areas often have a brownish stain running from them.

Take a good look at the floor for discolored carpeting or soft spots. If you have access to it, take a peak below. Also, look at the condition of the stringers in the back of the boat, specifically where they tie into the transom. You don't want any signs of rot or cracks.

If it only needs carpet and some TLC to the hull, it would probably clean up pretty nice and look like a million bucks, for not too much money.
