I am building an extension for my norris craft and would like to gel coat some parts of the wood rather than carpet them so if i epoxy the wood can i gel coat it to get a similar finish to the rest of the boat or will it look alot different??

So, you want to apply gel coat over epoxy resin? If so, I would think it would work, if prepped properly. Hopefully, someone here has done that and can comment.
I don't know why the finish would be different, as it would be all in the prep work of getting the epoxy nice and smooth before spraying the gel.

well thats what i was thinking but i would love to get feedback from someone who has done it not that i dont value your opinion its just experience is everything. Ive had many things i thought would work out for sure end up in disaster lol
get the finest grade of wood possible. You don't want any more grain on the finish side of the wood than possible. Sand the wood with 80 grit, and apply your gelcote directly to the wood. You don't really need epoxy.
There is one downside to gelcote and resin on wood surfaces that aren't covered in glass.
If they get wet, and the water finds a breach in the coating of gelcote or resin, then the wood gets wet without any way for the water to get out. It can rot even faster than wood that hasn't been coated.
Remember, the better the grade of wood, the longer is lasts. If $45-50 bucks more per sheet of good marine plywood sounds expensive, try doing the job 2-3 times to get it right.
