    Transom Question (Seacast)

Ok, so I poured my seacast transom the other day... it went off mostly without a hitch. That seems like it's pretty rugged at least for a small boat like mine. My question is, there wasn't enough to completely fill the transom to the very top. I'm about 3/4" below where it should come up to, there just wasn't enough material. It seems to me that everything structural is fine, and this last 1" will just finish things off. Can I pour fiberglass resin or something in there to just finish off that last 3/4" of an inch? And then do my fiberglass work over the top of the transom to cap it off. Do I need a special compound? Will the resin work? I saw some Fiberglass Resin Jelly stuff at the auto parts store today is that stuff any different?
    Hopefully this makes sense

you want a resin with milled fiber and colodial [sp] spheres. mix to a thick paste and putty into the void. then cap with 2 layers of 8 or 10 oz cloth. the last coat of resin needs pva or a table spoon of joy to seal the resin to the air[only for polyester resin].

Aaron, all I know is that I have read that you cannot pour resin in very thick layers. The resin produces a certain amount of heat while curing, and if it is very thick creates too much heat and actually damages itself. You may be able to build up layers of glass and resin to finish off the top. I believe that would be very strong. Some pics of the pour would be GREAT!

like he ^^^^^^ said ..if you pour raw resin in it will produce to much heat and "hotbatch" it will boil, smoke, want to catch fire, and worst of all it will crack bigtime being that thick.......i would rather see you fill it with bondo, bostix sealer than do that.. might look at a marine putty filler to do it with...

If the last 3/4" isn't really structural, can't you just resin in a couple strips of long 1/4" plywood in a sandwich to fill the gap?

Whatever you do don't use bondo it will absorb water like a sponge. The main ingredient is talc.
