    $9 recessed trolling motor tray

Accidentally posted this in the lounge, meant to post it here.

alright, i got tired of the sore legs, and i wasnt about to spend $100 on a pro tray for a $600 boat, so I got my fiberglass stuff and made my own! I didnt really care too much as long as it didnt look HORRIBLE, and I think it turned out pretty well for the amount invested. Used a cardboard box as a mold, and put 4 layers of woven mat around the entire box. glassed in a 1 x 4 into the bottom so I had something to attach the pedal to. I jumped on top of this thing, and it didnt budge, so I'm good to go.

Everything looks dirty, because it is. Its about to rain here, so afterwards, I'll snap a few pics after I clean everything up. Tape off the carpet, and put another layer of black paint on the tray and it'll do exactly what I ask of it.

Can/will someone give me the dimensions of a "factory" recessed tray? I'd like to build one too, but I want to take a different approach...bending metal and welding...

    Thanks in advance,

I have heard of using small stainless or aluminum sinks. If you go dumpster diving in an industrial section of town, you should be able to find some nice strong aluminum or stainless tray of some sort.

Looks good! How did you get the lip made that sits on top of the boat deck? Did you lay the 4 layers wet on wet with the woven glass?
    Thanks

Re: $9 recessed trolling motor tray (javelin90)

I used a cardboard box as a mold. laid out the flaps of the box, and trimmed them to 1". put in 1 layer of woven mat (basically just pressed it into all corners and covered everything including the flaps, then put in some 1 x 4's for added strength in the bottom. Added 3 more layers of glass to EVERYTHING, let it dry, then sanded down smooth.
