Hey guys, just to let everyone know over the winter I'll be tying up striper rigs w/fishfinder using 3/0 Mustad hooks snelled with 30lb leader and duo snaps. Also pouring plenty of real lead sinkers, no tin!!! shout me a IM if you in need.

yeah new thing if you fish above tappan zee additional 10 bucks on the licence. live in pa now up to 80 bucks for the licence. add that to NJ and Pa licences

So after not even getting a single bite last year I have a question for you striper experts. What sorts of areas should I look for to fish for them in the river. Not looking for anyones specific spots just a general guide to go on. I dont mind using my fishfinder and looking for certain areas I just have no idea what depth they like to come in, where they might stage, etc. I just blindly anchored in like 15' of water and hoped for the best

I am by no means an expert. In fact, I do not fish live bait for stripers at all. I'll fish for stripers (mostly tributaries) with jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, big rattletrap and sometimes even a topwater plug. But to just anchor out in the Hudson and soak a dead (or live) herring, or idle a downrigger around for hours, ..... not for me.
That being said, that's how ALL the big fish are caught. My biggest striper on an artificial was 22#. Last year a live bait fish down this way was like 55# or better.
If you're going the live bait route you need to catch some herring, ..... another boring azz endeavor. You jig for them with what looks like a tiny shad dart or you can scoop them up with a landing net if you can find them in a shallow tributary. Otherwise you'll need to buy them. I know guys who will use live or dead herring, or even chunks of one. Some guys will use eels.
Then I'd just look for some other guys anchored and try and see if there's fish around them. More often than not look for the fish by the channel edge. Easier up by you than down this way. One thing I've found is that the stripers are some tempermental feeders for sure. You may find them, but that doesn't mean they're going to bite. Another thing is, just because the are in a certain spot today doesn't mean they're going to be there tomorrow. They move around a LOT!
When they're running and you want to know where the stripers are in the Hudson down this way, all you have to do is take a ride across the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge and look up and down river to see where all the boats are anchored. It can get pretty crowded at times during the run.
If you have any up that way you can always buy a day or half day on a charter trip to get an idea how it's done. Then go back and do the same thing out of your own boat. Be persistent and develop your confidence. It's not magic, they're just fish. If you find and catch the smallies, you can figure out the stripers too. Oh yeah, don't forget your additional "Marine Recreational" fishing license. Don't you just love NY?

The adults have arrived. Should be good for the next 3 - 4 weeks. I'm guessing this one at 25 - 30 lbs. Got two like this one this morning on jerk bait. Some others followed the bait but didn't hit.

Caught a pair of 32 inchers this weekend. Herring are so abundant around albany it is hard to NOT catch them on a sabiki rig. Will post pics as soon as I upload them
