    It's $90.00 for 5 yrs. in Maine.
    Nonresident is OK

The price is the same for all boat trailers as long as the weigh less than 3K pounds empty not max GVW rating. All that is needed is Bill of sale as light duty trailers are not titled in Maine.

Oh yeah,no trailer inspections for those that require it now.

Is that registering it as a semi permanent trailer? When I've registered my trailer as a resident I go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Augusta and get a 5 year semi permanent trailer plate it's $5 per year...you can register them up to 10 yrs. I'm wondering if they've gone up that much.

Like any state I'm sure it's cheaper if you are a resident.

The killer is the empty weight, what would they use to determine that? most trailers just list max.. Mine kills me, $100 a year to drag a boat around for a few months...My parents have a house in Maine, I wonder if I could use that address, (summer home).

Even my trailer GVW is only 2990 lbs.
I( can post the link of the agent if you want Pat,give 'em a call.
I'm sure you'll have no problem with the empty weight.

Yes,in Maine you go through an agent for non-resident trailer plates.
I believe their fee is included in that $97.00 for 5 years.

So far from what I have gathered it is illegal in the state of MA. due to Exise tax rules...They all want their money...
section C is what I found in MA. law..

I just sent my check in the mail yesterday for maine plates for my trailer. I will let you all know how it goes. I don't see how it is illegal in MA to have maine plates, how does mass know where you are keeping the boat? Mass sucks anyways!

    Kyle,
I'd bet you that if a Mass Trooper sees a MA plate on a truck pulling a trailer with a ME plate, they will pull you over. And if your name is on both registrations, they will question it. It is not the boat, it's the trailer, and registrations need an address. Mass does not allow a PO Box to be an address. Maine does allow it, last I heard.

This is what will apply to any Ma. resident..
    (c) Any person who improperly registers a motor vehicle or trailer in another state or misrepresents the place of garaging of the motor vehicle or trailer within the commonwealth, for purposes of evading the payment of motor vehicle excise, sales and use taxes or insurance premiums, or to reduce the amount of such payment, shall be punishable by a fine of not less than $200 nor more than $1,000 for each offense. For purposes of this section, each taxable year that a motor vehicle or trailer is improperly registered shall be considered a separate offense, but no more than 3 years shall be the subject of prosecution.

I will take the chance I guess. I don't see how it is that different from everyone having NH plates on their car to avoid excise tax and insurance.

    More info.

Talked to Sam Kelley @ MBI
The reg. will have your name and their address.
He also says that insurance wise most companies don't have an issue.
If yours does he can steer you to someone that will take care of it.
Companies like GE and Warren Buffets Berksire Hathaway company have thousands of trailers registered in Maine.I believe Wal Mart has quite a few also.

If you are interested, call Sam,very helpful, also the head honcho

I think if it was illegal in the state of MA to have a maine plate then wouldn't MBI be in trouble for selling illegal plates to all MA residents? I see it all the time and I am not worried about it. Maine has the second most plates second to cali because it is easy to register there.

Go to Epping Raceway or whatever it's called now.
The amount of Maine plate on the racecar trailers is staggering.
I know a lot of 'em are from MA

It's not illegal in the state of Maine so they can not get in trouble for it..

Re: I am looking into getting Maine plates on my trailer. (cape cod basser)

The trailer I bought has never been registered,so a sales tax of $30.00 would have applied in Maine.
Decided to register one last year in NH for $36.00.
No sales tax in Maine when I register there next year.
