    Clear Water

Went to Winnisquam for the first time on Monday. Real nice launch and lake, but I have come to the conclusion that I know nothing about clear water lakes. Went looking for vegetation with little luck until late in the day at the North end. Tried fishing thew Soth end shallow area but just don't get it. Too many years of river fising for LM I guess. My partner did pick up a 1-14 SM to match my one snake with sharp teeth. Really hurts to get shut out and have HER catch the only fish. I guess I need to continue reading this forum to pick up pointers as most of the bigger lakes are clear.

I hear you there. It's tough going from small, dirty water lakes to monstrous, clear lakes. Completely different ways of fishing.

I haven't spent any time on the northern end of Winnisquam yet. But, down on the south end, past the island, there's a small cove alllllll the way down to the right. Kind of shallow, but a good amount of grass in there. Also, long casts to your spots, because the fish will see your boat and get spooked if you're too close.

Downside to that is you have to do a lot of driving around first to find the spots you want to fish, then move out and let it reload before making some casts.

Of course, this is what they tell me...I have yet to make any of it work.

You must mean the cove with the ledge outcrops. It was probably 300 or so before that where she got the SM. I think I may try throwind rattle traps or redeye shad to be able to cover more territory. The North end has areas that more resemble a river, plus I wanted to look at the whole lake on my first time. there is also a very small island in the middle Pot Island (?) that looked interesting. Not sure where our next exploration will be, maybe Squam or even Merrymeeting.

I would love to hit Squam, but too many people have warned me that there's a ton of boulders in there that will ruin your day. I've been warned more than once that it's not a great place to be if you've never been, and you're better off going with someone that knows the place first, get an idea of where some prop busters are hiding, then take your own boat. I love my boat, and I don't have the money to fix the motor again, so I'm going to stay clear of there for now.

Merrymeeting would be a nice spot to hit. Parking is tough, there's not a ton of room, but the launch is nice.

If I can't hit that tourney on Merrymeeting this weekend, then I'll be up on Winni on Saturday and possibly Sunday this weekend. Do a ton of driving around looking for spots to fish for that overnighter, and maybe do a little fishing. I just want to find a good spot that I can spend trolling through all night long.

its all in the positioning of the boat.
If your not catching anything with proper positioning neither will she

I don't do as well in clear water either.I'm going to do better next year

don't beat yourself up because you can't figure out Winnisquam...it is/can be super tough...especially as the year goes on. As far as Squam goes, get a map and go slow...and know what side of the spar markers to go on and you'll be all set. Too good not to go!

Are you ready to give up one of your spots where we can each catch just one?

    Agreed. Maybe some on Merrymeeting?
