    '03 225 EFI reed question

This is a dumb question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. Is there an "easy" way to look at the reeds in a 225 EFI to see if they are steel, or Boysen, or something else? The reason I ask is that when I bought my boat, used, it had some Boysen stickers on it. Just figured the guy had swapped the reeds out at some point in time. However, thought about it more and realized that this wasn't the original motor on the hull so that sticker could have been from a different motor.

I'm not very mechanically inclined so I don't want to go tearing into the motor too deep, but would like to know what reeds I have.

You would have to remove the whole fuel injection from the front of the motor and, the intake manifold. But keep in mind, that if you decide to do this, your going to probably need to replace some gaskets and or o-rings. They may tear when you remove it.

Actually, if you're simply wanting to look and observe the "composition" material of the reeds (and your engine is indeed a 2003 225 EFI with the single-shutter "top loaded air attenuator"):

Remove the plastic cover from above the throttle plates. Have someone hold the throttle wide open (ENGINE OFF, PLEASE), and while it's open, you can utilize a "bore scope" (or a telescopic mirror and bright flashlight) to gain a view of the reed boxes from the frontside.

Stainless reeds will be noticably "shiny stainless metal".

If you're wanting to see the "TRUE CONDITION" of the reeds.... remove the entire intake assembly for an inspection from the "crankcase side" of the reed blocks.
