have 2006 225 optimax. wanted some more juice. got a great deal on a 2008 yamami 250 hpdi. 18 hrs total time.the more i read the more i get nervous. are they finicky motors? should i buy a 250 xs merc instead. i know this is a loaded question. but! hoping for some honest input?
I've worked on both.... and if I had my choice, I'd choose the Optimax (hands down).
Both are good engines.... but the Optimax technology has been out there for over 13 years now..... constantly improving.

The main reason Id choose the Opti over the HPDI is the maintenance factor! The Optimax utilizes a single fuel filter, the HPDI utilizes 4 that are required to be replaced during the same interval as the single one on the opti. And the Yamaha filters aint cheap!! Merc filter like $43.00 and all the Yamahas (4) $150.00-$175.00.
Mmm,Cheaper to run and more power OPTI!
