    Small rant.

Why don’t people driving in rain and fog turn their lights? Just drove down to Lexington. Can’t hardly see the cars you are coming up behind.

Because people are stupid. Heck here in the ATL area we can't get people to turn their lights on when it is dark out, let alone when it rains. My cars have auto headlamps and also turn on when the wipers are wiping.

You would think by now that lights would come on automatically whenever the wipers are on.

In many states it’s the law but I doubt it is ever enforced. Seems to have gotten worse for some reason.

I think some people don't use the automatic feature that most cars have. Last weekend I drove home from Florida at night and saw multiple cars with no lights on at say 2am. I don't think drunk was the reason. If someone does not know they have lights off at night, I doubt they would notice in the rain during daylight

Aren't cars about 100% equipped with automatic setting and they just automatically turn on when it gets dim enough outside?

I see police cars driving in the rain or early in the morning without headlights on. Do they get a free pass or what?

I'm sure they have a made up reason for doing so

Another vote for stupidity. Look at the number of people texting. I drove by somebody watching a video while driving. How many people drive slow in the left lane?

The dimming feature varies from vehicle to vehicle. On some, it needs to be pretty dark out to turn on.
Most drivers don't pay attention to turning on their lights manually at all. They rely on DRLs and the automatic on-at-dusk activation feature - hence when it's daylight and raining, they are clueless that they have no rear lights and no headlights on.

I know a guy who, whenever he gets a new/different vehicle, always turns off the automatic features. Insists he knows better than the electronics. I remind him that his memory is shot; have to repeat this often because he can’t remember what I told him last time.

This is one of the features I like about my Toyota Highlander and can be set to your darkness preference and/or auto/manual mode. My fog lights are not set to go on with the low beams like some I see on the road. I turn them on only in fog conditions. As far as how they drive, I'd be happy if they signaled or stayed in their own lane !

Proper use of lights is lost on most folks.

Not having them on in the rain.

Keeping high beams on at night

Keeping headlights on when parked and shining their lights into traffic.

Off road lights on when on the road

Fog lights on all the time

No lights on when foggy or in the rain

    trailer lights not working

    On the lake:

    No lights at all

Bow lights on when not underway

    Stern light too low.

Having mood light bars on when underway

But hey I did see a BMW with a working turn signal yesterday. When did BMW start installing turn signals?

I see that too. I pondered why the police do not make a point to ticket for improper light use but then I noticed that they are amongst the biggest culprits.

I turn my lights on always even when its bright and sunny to try and stop all the idiots from pulling out in front of me !!
Done went through the ditch twice this year to keep from hitting them broadside and me hitting them head on!!
I have had some wild rides down the ditches at 55 mph.
Then they have the nerve to blow the horn at me and shoot a bird, they better be glad aint none of them stopped !
No one turns on blinkers or lights anymore!

Several years ago, it became a law in Kansas, that if the weather requires you to use your wipers, then you must turn your lights on. Don't know if it is getting enforced much. About same time, It became law to move over for any LE/emergency vehicle stopped on the road/road shoulder. Now that has been extended to any vehicle stopped with their emergency flashers on. It seems that the highway patrol and sheriff officers are too busy writing tickets for people driving over 100 mph to worry about other things.

The best way to know is stop one and ask them at 3AM in the morning or you could make a citizens arrest.
