Don and SPRINT 290 DC Results of frozen lower unit

Hello guys, I took my boat in thiis weekend to a certified Merc Tech and he tore the lower unit down and inspected it for me. GOOD news The gear case is in good shape. BUT!!! he said my prop shaft is bent i think 0.0005 or so. I guess what saved my gearcase was one of the seals was backed out completely so it was not under alot pressure thank goodness. But I told him to give me the full seal job and and new water pump and of course a new prop shaft. I know you all probably aren't interested but since You two gave me some in sight on my situation I thought I would let you know how I came out and to thank both of you for your expert opinion. Have a great week.

That's great to hear and thanks for posting back appreciate it very much.

One other thing I noticed in your post, prop shaft was bent .0005, I think that maybe a typo but if it is correct, that's still a good shaft. I think'n you may have ment to say: .005 or .050.

Sprint , You are right it is a typo I meant to say 5 thousanths of an inch. My Merc Tech said since my motor is a high RPM motor that it would eventually wear the seal out and mabey the bearing also. So while he had it torn down he said it would be better in the long run with a new shaft and I agree because I don't want to have to take it in for that again any time soon. But anyways thanks for getting back with me and for your thoughts. Have a good week.

    Keith,

Now that's more like it and your Merc Tech is correct in wanting to replace that shaft.
