    Apex 13 vs 16 comparison

Since both are 1920H x 1080V, I assume it's simlilar to the other models lines with the larger units losing a bit of sharpness/clarity due to the pixel decrease for a given size? Anyone running both sizes and can compare? As mentioned in my other upgrade thread, would be using on bow with Mega 360, or at times a 30/70 split with VX map card... Looks like the actual screen size difference is not 3", but 13.3 vs 15.6 - so closer to 2".

    Apex 13

    Apex 16
Display Size - Diagonal 15.6 in

Apex 16 would be my graph of choice for 360....currently debating upgrading from Solix 12.
I mainly fish for walleye and smallmouth and typically boat is in 30+fow....so first 30ft of 360 display around the boat is all water column.
So have to zoom out to see a true cast distance away.
Regardless of resolution I think the larger display would be beneficial if you can afford it. I never say wow look how sharp that image of that rock is 90 ft away...I just want to know theres a rock there.

The difference in size(12 to 13) is not much, however the resolution difference from solix is a big difference! For 78, PM Steve(SLY), he had both those units at the same time.

I have the Apex 13, 16, and 19. At the helm, I have the 19 and 13, and the 16 is at the bow. There is a marked difference between Solix and Apex, with Apex being far superior. At the Helm, I tend to use a 3-way or 4-way split view on my Apex 19. That's the reason I really like the 19 at the helm. If you think about it, a 4-way split view on an Apex 19 is like having 4 separate 8" units to view your imaging.

As for quality difference between the 3 sizes, I don't really notice it... I just think bigger is better and gives you more real estate to play with.

And the new UI makes turning those 8" units into a 19" unit and then back again so so so much easier than before.

I think that is the same way we always went to full screen and back since Onix. 2 finger touch. Or am I just delusional. Bob

I am leaning towards the 16... in for a penny and all. I just wanted to be sure no image degradation in the larger sizes. Apex 16 at the bow for M360 and VX mapping, along with the Garmin 12", and replacing the Helix (instead of moving it to console) with Xplore 12 for the console is the plan I think. That way I get HB's SI in the Xplore, and can network units and share things more easily than if I had a Helix still in the mix. So, Apex first, then save a bit for the Xplore.

The new UI has a little icon on the top of the screen that maximizes/minimizes the current window. That 2 finger touch thing was a PIA and for me only worked maybe 50% of the time.

I think the APEX13 is the only unit that gives you more screen for the advertised screen size. Even Helix was just above the minimum for the advertised size versus "legal" for advertising size.

Most products that measure screen size round up or down to the nearest whole number.

Screen sizes are like the lithium battery designation of 12.8 volts nominal. It is a class. They all have the exact dimensions in the spec’s. It is not deceptive advertizing.

I will have to read up on the icon but doesn’t the current window require a touch to make it the “current” window? It is another way if it works better for you. Bob

Yes, you have to select which pane you want the min/max icon to effect.

Apex 13 and 16 on my bow. Mainly use the 16 for Mega 360 and the 13 for mapping and 2d

Ahh.. thank you. Phew, that is wide. I mean, it's cool, just wider than I would have imagined. I guess HB in general are just wider than Lowrance/Garmin as a general rule due to form factor. Maybe I should bust out the tape measure to confirm a few things before I order lol...

My plan is to run Map and M360, likely in a 30/70 split - which is why I think 16 would be the better choice. I mean, I run it now with a Helix 12, but would prefer both splits to be larger/wider ;).

I would think having two units side by side on the bottom of a triple mount would be wider than that single 16. I don’t recall the price difference between the two but my two cents would be go for the Apex 16 vs the 13. If you’re already spending a decent chunk of coin, may as well get the bigger screen. Especially for what you’re looking to do with it.

It is only a $500 difference. Big package price, but not a big dif % wise.

The Apex definitely has a wider screen format than the other Humminbird units. This is a picture of my Apex 19 compared with my previous Solix 15 and Solix 12.

Also, you are probably already aware. But since you are no longer going to use a Lowrance for mapping on the bow and keeping one at the console. If going to an Apex unit you could put your saved waypoints from Lowrance into SD card and transfer them to the Apex unit. This still allows you to see/fish desired waypoints without needing the Lowrance on the bow.

Bit of a dissenting opinion from a fishing buddy... Suggested a better choice would be putting the Apex for the Console, where the HD screen would be more beneficial for SI/DI when searching for structure, etc and also mapping as well. Thought process is while the Apex would also benefit the 360 at the bow, the ranges one typically use 360 for are served perfectly fine with the resolution of the Helix I already have (or Solix/Xplore).

Which, when I think about it does make sense. Just keep the Helix G4N MDI+ on the bow for the time being, and grab the Apex 13 MSI for the console. Or even a nice low cost used Solix G3, for that matter, for a lesser cost option. (reason I am not considering the Xplore is it's inability to share wayponts, etc with my existing Helix, unless I am mis-understanding that point).
